Football Team Scores On First Play, Never Looks Back

It took just one play on offense to set the tone. Newtown High School's football team scored a touchdown — a 64-yard screen pass from quarterback Jack Colonel to Kellen Kane for a TD — on its first offensive snap and rolled to a 42-6 win over visiting Joel Barlow of Redding on October 23.

The Nighthawks won their second straight game and improved to 3-3.

Newtown built a commanding 28-0 lead after one quarter of play and was comfortably in front 42-0 at halftime. After Kane, a freshman, got the scoring started another first-year high school athlete, Kyle Field, kicked his first extra point of the night.

A fumble recovery by Graham Spencer led to Colone's first of two touchdown runs. Cam Kullgren reeled in a 33-yard touchdown catch and run. A long run by Spencer Maddox and a Jackson Powers rush for a first down on fourth and one set up Jake Fattibene's one-yard rush into the end zone to cap the opening-quarter scoring.

Spencer tackled Barlow's punter for a huge loss, setting up great Nighthawk field position at the Falcon 21. That set up Kullgren's 15-yard TD reception on fourth down. A long rush by Powers led to Colonel's two-yard touchdown run.

Up next for NHS is a visit to Bunnell of Stratford on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6:30 pm.
