Local Elections Matter

To the Editor:

It is hard to believe that nearly two years have passed since we were elected to the Board of Selectmen, and now another election is upon us. It has been a privilege to serve the community we both love and appreciate, and whatever success we have had for Newtown came with the help of many elected officials, employees, and community volunteers. We would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the partnership we enjoy with our fellow Selectman, Jeff Capeci, who also loves this community and puts it before partisanship. Over the last two years, the Board of Selectmen has made roads and public safety top priorities. We have also worked to reduce our reliance on bonding by focusing on needs versus wants. In addition, we have continued to strengthen the funding position of the town’s pension plan. In a state where can-kicking has become the norm, Newtown continues to build on its already strong fiscal measures.

While this has been a different election season for us with an uncontested race for First Selectman, it is still no less an important election for our community. The last municipal election in 2017 saw turnout of nearly 40 percent; however, in 2015, it was 29 percent and 25 percent in 2013. The common denominator in 2013 and 2015 was an uncontested race for First Selectman. Local elections have a large impact on our lives, and we are lucky to have people working hard as incumbents and challengers that are worthy of consideration.

We are fortunate to appear on the ballot with so many qualified Democratic candidates that have served our community with distinction or would like to have the opportunity to do so. Please join us in voting Row A on November 5th.

Sincerely,

Daniel Rosenthal
