Golden Goal: Girls’ Soccer Team Advances With OT Win, Boys Fall In Bethel

Update: The girls' soccer team lost 2-1 at Weston in the SWC semifinals on November 2.

Newtown High School’s girls’ soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the South-West Conference Tournament in dramatic fashion. Third-seeded Newtown edged visiting and sixth-seeded Immaculate of Danbury 1-0 in overtime on October 29.

Riley Powers took a pass from Joey Libero along the left wing and ended the game with a blast to the right side of the goal, sparking a celebration on the field.

The Nighthawks will play an opponent to be determined in the November 2 semis.

Newtown applied heavy pressure on Immaculate’s defense and goal area throughout the second half as Skylar Howard, Powers, Kendyl Morgenstern, Katie Rowan, Bella Gerace, and Elena Sughrue created chances.
