Collision Outside Newtown Deli

Newtown Police report Kurt Berglund, 52, of Watertown, operating a 2009 Subaru Outback, was attempting to turn left from the Newtown Deli parking lot onto South Main Street at 6:12 am October 13. Ana Rodriguez, 52, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2022 Cadillac Xt5, was traveling southbound on South Main Street. Police say as Berglund pulled from the drive, his vehicle struck Rodriguez’s, front to driver’s side.

Rodriguez was transported by Newtown EMS to Danbury Hospital. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action is mentioned in the report.

Ran Over Steel Plates

Newtown Police report Jill Masten, 55, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2011 Mercedes-Benz C300, was traveling eastbound on Forest Drive at 2:05 pm October 13. The center area of Forest Drive was under construction and there was an open hole in the roadway. Masten was directed by workers to travel right around the open hole, partially onto the grassy area adjacent to the roadway. Police say while passing the construction area, Masten’s vehicle made contact with steel plates stacked off the roadway in the grassy area.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken.

Nissan Hits Audi

Newtown Police report Dean Carollo, 17, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2011 Nissan Sentra, was waiting to make a turn onto Mile Hill Road from Queen Street at 4:41 pm October 14. Margaret Hetherington, 58, of Newtown, operating a 2013 Audi A6, was waiting to make a turn onto Mile Hill Road from Queen Street ahead of Carollo. Police say Carollo inched forward and the front of his vehicle bumped the rear of Hetherington’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was mentioned in the report.

Door Hit In Gas Station Lot

Newtown Police report Castro Canales, 20, of Danbury, operating a 2003 Ford F350 Super Duty pulling a trailer, was driving through a gas station lot on Hawleyville Road at 8:22 am October 18. The trailer struck the open driver’s side door of a Chevrolet Silverado owned by Aaron Collie, 39, of Waterbury.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken as the incident occurred on private property.

Mechanical Problems Lead To Collision

Newtown Police report Richard Natoli, 68, of Southbury, operating a 2012 Nissan Murano, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road at 3:16 pm October 18. Ryan Harrington, 48, of West Hartford, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road in the right turn lane. Police say Natoli turned left to enter the driveway of the Blue Colony Diner, and made contact with Harrington’s vehicle. Natoli said his vehicle was having mechanical problems, causing him to try and enter the parking lot.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Natoli was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way while making a left hand turn.

Mirrors Hit

Newtown Police report Timothy Coleman, 36, of Monroe, operating a 2004 Ford E450 Super Body, was traveling westbound on Wasserman Way at 1:05 pm October 19. Richard Paloian, 57, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2008 GMC 3500, was traveling eastbound on Wasserman Way. Police say both sides of the road were constricted due to construction, and the driver’s side mirrors of both vehicles collided.

No injuries were reported.

Coleman was issued a infraction for operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

Collision On Main Street

Newtown Police report Thomas Gilmore, 73, of Norwalk, operating a 2018 Cadillac Escalade, was stopped at a stop sign on Church Hill Road, at Main Street, at 5:02 pm October 19. Sam Telhiard, 48, of Newtown, operating a 2016 Mazda CX-5, was traveling northbound on Main Street. Police say Gilmore attempted to turn onto Main Street and the front bumper of Telhiard’s vehicle struck the front left area of Gilmore’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Gilmore was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at an intersection.

Sideswiped While Passing

Newtown Police report Bryan Gomez, 22, of Newtown, operating a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado, was traveling eastbound on Wasserman Way at 7:27 pm October 19. Robert Schmidt, 77, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2017 Toyota Camry, was traveling eastbound on Wasserman Way ahead of Gomez. Police say Gomez attempted to pass Schmidt in the right eastbound travel lane and sideswiped Schmidt’s vehicle in the process.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Gomez was issued an infraction for improper passing.

DUI Arrest

Newtown Police report Bayron Paute, 32, of Danbury, was arrested at 10:28 pm October 22 on the charges of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to drive in the proper lane, and operating a motor vehicle without a license. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of November 4.

Prius Hits Sonata

Newtown Police report Glenn Klein, 65, of Newtown, operating a 2014 Toyota Prius, was in the northbound travel lane on Mt Pleasant Road, stopped at the light on Hawleyville Road, at 4:16 pm October 23. He was behind a 2014 Hyundai Sonata operated by Angela Shapiro, 32, of Hopewell Junction, N.Y. Police say Shapiro slowly accelerated and stopped again as the light was red. Klein did not stop in time and the front of his vehicle struck the rear of Shapiro’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Klein was issued a verbal warning for following too closely.

Rear-Ended On Hattertown Road

Newtown Police report Stefan Cibere, 40, of Bethel, operating a 2020 Chevrolet Suburban, was traveling eastbound on Hattertown Road at 5:23 pm October 24. He was traveling behind a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta operated by Richard Pacheco, 69, of Newtown. Pacheco slowed as a vehicle ahead of him was turning onto Merlin Road. Police say Cibere did not slow in time and the front of his vehicle struck the rear of Pacheco’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Cibere was issued a verbal warning for following too closely.

Newtown Police, Newtown Hook & Ladder and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the area of 52 Church Hill Road around 2:20 pm Tuesday, October 25, following a collision between a Volkswagen sedan and Honda minivan. Both vehicles were moved into the parking lot to the north of the crash scene, alleviating some of the resulting traffic slowdown.
