A windy rainstorm that occurred overnight from Halloween into Friday, November 1, caused tree limbs to fall onto electric lines across town, resulting in about 20 local roads temporarily being closed to traffic, and public schools being closed due to the transportation hazards posed by the situation.

The school system’s administrative offices were scheduled to reopen at 10 am on Friday.

Police were not immediately available for comment on the storm’s effects.

Eversource, the electric utility company, reported at 8:45 am on Friday that 1,237 of its 11,378 Newtown customers were without power, representing about 10.8 percent of its local customers having no electricity. As the firm continued making repairs, by 9:45 am, there were 1,047 customers without power, representing 9.2 percent of Eversource’s local customer base.

Anthony Capozziello, the town’s acting highway foreman, said that about 20 local roads were closed overnight. By 9 am on Friday, town crews had reopened ten of those roads, he said. Mr Capozziello said it is expected that all local roads be reopened by 3 pm Friday. More than 25 public works employees are involved in the cleanup project, he said.

Town crews handle most of the tree work in such situations, but, when necessary, call in tree removal specialists for complicated tasks, he explained.

The calls for help to the five local volunteer fire companies started coming in at about 6 pm on Halloween, according to Maureen Will, town director of emergency communications. Between then and 6 am on Friday, nearly 20 calls involving fallen tree limbs were received.

Calls for wires down were received from areas including New Lebbon Road; near the intersection of Butterfield Road and Butternut Ridge; Huntingtown Road; Pond Brook Road; Great Ring Road; Sugar Lane; Hanover Road; near the intersection of Hattertown Road and Purdy Station Road; Jacklin Road; near the intersection of Hattertown Road and Merlins Lane; near the intersection of Main Street and Currituck Road; near the intersection of Currituck Road and The Old Road; near the intersection of Mile Hill Road South and Timber Lane; Whippoorwill Hill Road; near the intersection of Toddy Hill Road and Vining Road; and Indian Hill Lane.

Calls for downed wires continued coming into the Newtown Emergency Communications Center on Friday morning.

It was unclear when all electric service would be restored.
