New Scholarships Available At NHS

The Newtown High School career center announced this week that additional scholarships are available to qualified students.

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program – offering full scholarships (300 scholarships nationally) for high school sophomores, juniors or seniors to spend a year in Germany attending school and living with a host family from July or August, 2000 until the following summer.  Qualified applicants must be between 15 and 18 years of age as of July 1, 2000, have a GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale and be a U.S. citizen.  Knowledge of the German language is not required.  Application postmark deadline is December 8, 1999.  For more information contact 800/Teenage or www.USAGermanyScholarship.org. Applications are available on-line as well as in the Career Center.

The American Legion National High School Oratorical Contest – for students under the age of 20 years on the date of the National Contest and who are presently enrolled in a high school or junior high school.  The subject to be used for the Prepared Oration must be on some phase of the Constitution of the United States and give emphasis to the attendant duties and obligations of a citizen to our government.  State winners advance to national competition.  Detailed written instructions available in the Career Center.  Deadline determined by local Legion Post.  For more information on local competition contact Boyd Saxton at 426-7728.

Connecticut Burglar and Fire Alarm Association, Inc. – for graduating high school Connecticut seniors who are going on to college.  Student must have a father, mother or natural guardian who is a full-time employee (not on disability) of the Connecticut Police or Fire Communities.  Volunteer fire departments are recognized.  In Connecticut, first prize is $1,000 and second prize is $500.  Deadline for completed applications is February 25, 2000.

Horatio Alger Enriching America Awards Program – for high school sophomores or juniors who have committed themselves to making a substantial difference in the lives of others.  Two students will be picked from each state and receive a $2,000 savings bond.  Interested students should see Mrs McEvoy in the Career Center right away.  Two students can be chosen from Newtown High School and applications must be received in the Career Center by November 12, 1999.

The Principal’s Leadership Award—for senior high school students who are student leaders. Sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and Herff Jones. Only one student will be nominated from Newtown High School. Nominees should be in the top 20% of their class. Nominations are not based on need. The program will award 150 scholarships of $1,000 each. Completed applications must be in to the Career Center no later than November 19.
