avv/gs set 11/2 #718273

EASTON, CONN. — Milton and Sue Bond are exhibiting reverse glass paintings at The Easton Library Gallery through January 10. An artist reception will be on Saturday, November 17, from 12:30 to 2:30 pm.

Milton Bond is a self-taught artist who was born in Bridgeport, Conn., and lives in Stratford, Conn.

Reverse glass painting is an ancient art first practiced in Egypt in the Fourth Century CE and also traced to Thirteenth Century Venice and the Orient. The technique became popular in the early 1800s and was utilized in clock faces. The painting is done in layers with the up-close objects painted on first and the background objects viewed painted on last and varnish in between each layer.

Now 89 years old, Bond has been doing reverse glass painting for more than 40 years. His work has been shown worldwide including the Palace of Versailles, the Smithsonian Institution, the Fenimore House in Cooperstown, N.Y., the New York Museum of American Folk Art and The White House.

He taught his daughter Sue Bond the technique of reverse glass painting. She has been doing artwork for private collectors for the past five years.

The Easton Public Library is at 691 Morehouse Road. For more information, call 203-261-0134.
