The Why Of It All

To the Editor:

As election season comes to an end, I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude for all the kindness and encouragement I have received from my fellow neighbors. It has been a privilege serving on the Board of Education and it is an honor to be listed on the ballot this November 7.

As I traveled around town the past few months and shared my own story of overcoming childhood adversity, one of the things that stood out is how often people were surprised to learn that I have six children — my oldest is in law school, two are in college, two more in high school, and my youngest is in kindergarten.

My friends used to tease that I could field my own basketball team. Now they tease that I can field my own campaign rallies.

The fact is, part of who I am is an experienced trial lawyer, with a long track record of service as a trusted board room advisor for nonprofits, private businesses, and publicly traded companies. I have also been an entrepreneur, a local business owner, a professional mediator, a college professor, a volunteer, and a passionate supporter of local organizations, particularly those serving the most vulnerable.

All of this is part of who I am.

But what I truly am, above all else, is a parent wanting to do the very best I can for my children. A parent working to keep them safe while providing opportunities that I never had. A parent hoping to make the world a little bit better for them than it was for me.

Just like you.

Children are at the center of everything that I do — at home, at work, on the Board.

They are my why.

Thank you again for considering my candidacy.

Would you read the challenged books to your children? Why not?
