The most popular show on public television for several years was Antiques Roadshow. Find out something about why the show was so popular, what composes the world of antiques, and more, during the next Newtown Historical Society program.

Longtime Newtown resident and antiques dealer Lincoln Sander will present “Introduction to the World of Antiques” on Monday, November 10, at 7:30 pm. The free program will be in the community room of C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street in Newtown.

Antiques can be found everywhere, in every form. But what is it that makes them “antiques” rather than old junk? And even if they are antique, does that make them valuable?

Where does one find antiques, what are the best areas of collecting, are antiques investments, decorations, simply vanity, or something else? How does one build a collection?

Many have seen one or more of the innumerable antiques shows that have spun off from the popularity of Antiques Roadshow The program’s tapings often draw thousands of people, most of them bringing two items they are hoping will be appraised at high values. While most of them enjoy the experience, the majority go home disappointed in the appraisal.

Attendees of Mr Sander’s program will learn what to look for, how to tell the good from the bad, the real from the reproduction, and how to participate in the wonderful world of the antique.

Mr Sander has been an antiques dealer for many years, selling from his home and exhibiting at antiques shows. He recently stepped down from the position of Executive Director of the Antiques Dealers of America, and currently serves as the organization’s treasurer.

He also served for a number of years as president of Newtown Historical Society.

Light refreshments will be served following the presentation.
