Newtown Resident Will Share Recent ‘Moments’ In Library Exhibition

An opening reception is planned for Sunday, November 6, from 2 to 4 pm for “Moments: Recent Paintings, 2003-2005,” an exhibition of paintings by the Newtown resident Beth Schweitzer.

The exhibition will open on November 4 and will remain on view during regular library hours until November 30 in The Olga Knoepke Memorial Meeting Room.

Mrs Schweitzer’s recent work is a dramatic departure from the large, abstract expressionist paintings she has done in years past. Although she uses the vivid colors of her nonfigurative work, she recently moved towards a more representational painting style. She has also switched from working in oils to working primarily in acrylics.

Her paintings are celebrations of unassuming moments. Through her use of color and strong composition, she takes the everyday and makes it heroic.

Mrs Schweitzer graduated from Boston University. She studied painting at State University of New York at Purchase, and at Wooster Community Art Center in Danbury but for the most part, she is self taught.

This past year she was a Society of Creative Arts of Newtown award recipient for her painting, “Reverie.”

Mrs Schweitzer shares her home with her husband, her two children, and her eight Labrador retrievers.

Mrs Schweitzer’s paintings make up one of three special exhibitions currently on view at C.H. Booth Library. Until November 30, turned wood works by Russell Strasburger are on view, as are items recently acquired by Newtown Historical  Society including Civil War artifacts that once belonged to the Newtown soldier William Sniffen.
