Westover School Presenting ‘Fiddler On The Roof’

MIDDLEBURY — Westover drama students will stage Joseph Stein’s Fiddler on the Roof, a comical story with a serious subject matter influenced by the stories of Sholem Aleichem, at 7:30 pm on Friday, November 4, and Saturday, November 5. The performances will be in the school’s newly renovated Performing Arts Center.

The story captures the hardships faced by Jewish peasants, coping with everyday life while upholding the Jewish traditions, during pre-Revolutionary Russia. The story focuses on a Jewish milkman named Tevye who tries to maintain his Jewish traditions and beliefs while also trying to marry off his three oldest daughters.

Changing times cause his daughters to have their own thoughts about marriage and about whom they would like to marry. Thus, Tevye has to cope with his daughters breaking away from Jewish customs.

An underlying story about the Jewish peasants feeling increasingly unwelcome in their villages because of pre-Revolutionary Russia is also told in this touching tale of love, of gaining acceptance, and of coping with everyday life.

Eventually, the Jewish peasants of Anatevka, the village where Tevye and his friends and family reside, are forced to move.

The production includes music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick which will be performed by the cast as well as by members of the Westover Instrument Ensemble under the direction of Music Director Robert Havery. Patti Buchanan is choreographer.

Parking and entrance to the Arts Center are both on South Street. Reservations may be made by calling 203-577-4535.

There is no charge for admission, but donations will be gratefully accepted. The cast and crew of Westover’s Fiddler on the Roof have decided to give all proceeds to the residents of Pass Christian, Miss., victims of Hurricane Katrina, so that they may build a new playground.
