Children’s Programs

*Nappy’s Puppets: Jim Napolitano will bring his unique form of shadow puppetry to the C.H. Booth Library on Saturday, November 6, for a 2 pm performance.

Jim is a graduate of the University of Connecticut’s Puppet Arts Program and has performed with his puppets on “Between the Lions” and for The Disney Channel.

The entire family will enjoy singing along with Nappy’s Puppets as they perform some of the silliest songs known to mankind.

No registration is required.

*Thanksgiving Craft: Children ages 6 and up are invited to join Marie Walker on Saturday, November 13, at 1 pm, for a Thanksgiving craft workshop.

Class size is limited and a $3 material fee is due upon registration. For more information call Booth Library Children’s Department, 426-3851.

*Steven Kellogg, Back For A Visit: Children’s author and illustrator extraordinaire (and former Newtown resident) Steven Kellogg will be returning on Saturday, November 20, at 1 pm, to talk about his latest children’s books – Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, Jimmy’s Boa and The Bungee Jump Slam Dunk, Clorinda, and a treasury of Pinkerton stories just right for gift giving.

Mr Kellogg will give a brief presentation, after which he will happily sign books for his fans. Copies of the abovementioned titles as well as some old favorites will be available for purchase on the day of the program. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet this icon of children’s literature up close and personal.

Young Adults

*Poetry Night: Our Second Annual Poetry Reading Night will be Friday, November 12.

Read your original poetry or that of another author to an admiring audience. Submit poems by November 8 to Mrs Brown, YA Librarian. Readers may sign up at the main floor circulation desk or by calling the library.

The Newtown Community is invited to attend the reading, which will begin at 7 pm.

*Scrabble Club will commence on Sunday, November 7, with informal play in the Young Adult area.

Drop in and have some fun with this classic word game between 1 and 5 pm.

*YA Book Discussion: Let’s talk about The Birchbark House by Louise Erdrich on Wednesday, November 17, from 4 to 5 pm.

The satisfying rhythms of Native American life are shattered when a visitor comes to their island lodge one winter night in 1847, bringing with him an invisible enemy that will change things forever for Omakayas and her tribe.

Adult Programs

*Let’s Wok Again: Norma Chang will be returning to the library for a Chinese cooking demonstration on Tuesday, November 9, at 7 pm.

Norma offers a unique blend of tips on cooking and gardening, all done with her wonderful sense of humor and wit. The class is free and there will lots of opportunities for tasting. Space is limited, however, so please sign up early.

*Advanced Directives: On Tuesday, November 16, at 7:30 pm, The Danbury Hospital Ethics Committee will be providing a panel discussion on how to plan for the end of life.

Topics include living wills, power of attorney, donor procedures, and other related issues that will help families with the difficult situations that sometimes come. Learn how to avoid bitter endings. Please call to reserve a place.

*Computer Class: Dan Tannenbaum will return to the library to lead a computer class for beginners on Saturday, November 20, from 9 am until noon.

There is no charge for the class, but reservations to hold a space for you are requested.

*Foreign Film Series: The Middle of the World is a film about a family of seven journeying across the hinterlands of Brazil by bicycle. This is a touching and tender story which explores the courage of the human spirit.

In Portuguese with English subtitles, the film will be screened on Tuesday, November 23, at 7:30 pm.

*Intrepid Travelers: On Wednesday, November 30, at 7:30 pm, Dr Milton Clark and his wife Wendy, a/k/a The Intrepid Travelers, will continue their travelogue series with a talk on Ethiopia.

Come view their award winning photos and hear about some  incredible adventures.

C.H. Booth Library, at 25 Main Street, can be reached at 426-4533. Winter hours have returned: The library is now open Monday through Thursday from 10 am to 8 pm, Friday from noon to 5 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm.
