ROXBURY — “Familiar Paths,” an exhibit of mixed media sculpture by Liz Alpert Fay and photographs and paintings by Kimberly Day Proctor, will open with a reception at Minor Memorial Library, 23 South Street in Roxbury, on Saturday, November 8, from 2 to 4 pm.

The show will continue during regular library hours, when the Community Room is not in use for a special program, through January 3.

The beauty of various found objects inspires Liz Alpert Fay to use them, along with pieces of her own textiles, to create interesting and unusual – and sometimes, humorous – sculptures.  The Sandy Hook artist is well-known for her art quilts and exquisite hand-hooked rugs.

Her quilts have been shown at “Quilt National” and at the American Craft Museum in New York. In addition, her work is included in the collections of The White House; The Museum of Arts and Design, New York City; and numerous private collections around the world.

In addition to this upcoming exhibition, Ms Fay’s work is also currently on view at The University of Connecticut-Stamford campus. The exhibit “Hooked Art 2014,” the fall exhibition in the University’s Gallery, presents work by 18 female artists from the United States and Canada, who create contemporary hooked fiber art. According to organizers, the eclectic show demonstrates “a diversity of ideas, materials and techniques, and curated as a representation of the breadth of work being created in this medium today.”

Kimberly Day Proctor, an award-winning artist and former Newtown resident, will be exhibiting her series of photographs “Vine and Stone,” which show scenes in New England and Pennsylvania that reflect the interaction of time, plant growth and architecture.

Ms Proctor will also be displaying landscapes inspired by the surrounding areas of Connecticut. She has illustrated several books, including Sydney Eddison’s Gardening for a Lifetime.

The library is handicapped accessible. Its regular hours are Monday, noon to 7 pm; Wednesday, 10 am to 5 pm; Thursday, 12 noon to 5 pm; Friday, 10 am to 5 pm; and Saturday, 10 am to 2 pm. The library will be closed Wednesday, November 12, in observance of Veterans Day; November 27 and 28 in observance of Thanksgiving; and Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

The beauty of found objects inspires Sandy Hook artist Liz Alpert Fay, who is very well known for her hand hooked artwork, to create unusual sculpture. “Fowl Front” is one such work by Ms Fay. “Fish or Fowl” was done from reclaimed metal, wood and various sewing fasteners, vintage fishing lures, hat trims, wire, beads, and a wild cherry branch. The creation rests on a custom made metal base by Ryan Blessey. It is encased in a Plexiglass box, and measures 24½ inches high, 34½ inches wide by 12 inches deep.
“Blueberry at Flanders” is a painting by Kimberly Day Proctor, one of two local artists with an exhibition in November at Minor Memorial Library.
