Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team concluded the regular season with a makeup meet on October 28, and defeated the visiting Masuk Panthers 100-76. The meet was postponed two days earlier due to anticipated road hazards from rain and wind that evening. Newtown sealed the team win in the 200-yard freestyle relay race and exhibitioned the final three events.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Shayna Millard, Brianna Deierlein, Cate Fischer, and Norah Kolb was first in 1:58.28.

Alexa Kwarcinski won the 200 freestyle race in 2:06.38. Kolb was tops in the 200 individual medley, wrapping up the race in 2:23.60. Deierlein won the 50 in 24.97.

Ella Hall was Newtown’s top diver and finished second with a score of 194.25.

Kwarcinski won the 100 butterfly race in 1:06.78. Lauren Smiley won the 100 free in 1:00.94. Maura Daly was first in the 500, making her final touch in 6:05.32.

The 200 free relay team of Deierlein, Kwarcinski, Diellza Limani, and Kolb was first in 1:44.90.

Grace Fischer had the fastest time in the 100 backstroke event, finishing in 1:06.94, Daniella Guerrieri was the fastest Newtown finisher in the 100 breaststroke event with a time of 1:24.97.

Newtown’s 400 free relay of Millard, Limani, Kwarcinski, and Deierlein finished in 3:54.56.

The Nighthawks are set for the postseason. The South-West Conference diving competition was to have taken place Wednesday (after The Bee sports section went to press) and the swimming competition is scheduled to take place at Masuk on Saturday, November 6, starting at 3:30 pm.

“I’m very excited to see what we’re going to do at SWCs. It’s going to be a fight between the top teams and trying to figure out who’s going to end up where,” Newtown Coach Becky Osborne said.

Weston, Pomperaug of Southbury, Newtown, and the Immaculate-Bethel co-op are strong teams atop the conference standings. Osborne said her team members have put in a lot of effort training all season and now it is time to put that hard work to the test against the best.
