Newtown Scholarship Association is set to host a “Casino Night” fundraiser on Saturday, November 12, at 6 pm at Rock Ridge Country Club, 214 Sugar Street.

“Join us for Casino Night and try your luck at casino games all in support of need-based scholarships for Newtown’s high school seniors,” a description for the event reads. “Your ticket includes dinner, cocktails, music, and ‘funny money’ plus access to the champagne raffle and silent auction.”

According to Newtown Scholarship Association, it awarded $95,650 to 53 Newtown resident graduating seniors from Newtown High School and Immaculate High School in the spring of 2022 and $155,100 was awarded to 63 returning college students. The scholarships are need-based and awarded after an application process that includes a personal essay and an interview.

“I hope Bee readers will join us on November 12 to have some fun at Casino Night,” Newtown Scholarship Association Vice President Cindy Carlson said in a recent email. “Win or lose, all money raised makes college tuition a bit more affordable for our Newtown and Sandy Hook high school seniors. The event is right here in town, dress is casual, and the cause has been a tradition in town since 1937.”

Newtown Scholarship Association’s mission is to make a college education more affordable for the town’s high school graduates, according to a description for the event.

“From just a single award in that first year, we most recently funded four-year scholarships for more than 150 students that exceed $250,000. With rising tuition costs, the financial need of Newtown’s students is increasing and we need your help. Every donation and event ticket purchase is greatly appreciated and makes a difference in the future of these promising students,” the description reads.
