Cross Country Team Third In State Open, Headed To New England Race
Third in all of Connecticut. Newtown High School's boys' cross country team earned that ranking following its Class L title on Halloween and solidified its distinction with a third-place finish at the November 5 State Open at Manchester's Wickham Park.
With this placement, the Nighthawks will compete in the New England Championships in Belfast, Maine on November 14; the race kicks off at 11:30 am.
Only Xavier of Middletown (with a score of 45) and Greenwich (93) finished above Newtown (177), The Nighthawks fended off Glastonbury (185). Ridgefield rounded out the top five with a score of 217.
"Really pleased the boys found a way to get it done. Their dedication, determination, and consistency paid off," NHS Coach Carl Strait said. "The conditions were not optimal — very humid — but the boys ran for places today and found a way to finish third in the state and qualify for New Englands as a team next Saturday."
Newtown's top finisher was Orion Lowery who came in 12th overall with a time of 16:29.6. Griswold's Tycen LaBelle won the race in 15:37.6. Newtown was represented by Duncan Kolb in 48th place with a time of 17:09.9, Bryce Taylor in 49th in 17:10.9, Sebastian Colburn in 63rd with a time of 17:21.8, and Marc Caratas in 81st, finishing in 17:29.4.
The Hawks have had quite a fall; they captured their second straight South-West Conference Championship before claiming the program's first state title since a three-peat in 1989.
