Collided With Building

Newtown Police report Kevin Kapell, 60, of Rochester, N.Y., was starting his vehicle from a parking lot on South Main Street at 9:48 am October 8. His vehicle drove forward into the building, striking the facade. Kapell told police his foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas pedal.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Rear-Ended Civic

Newtown Police report Jennifer Barreto-Sandoval, 24, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2007 Toyota Corolla, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 5:29 pm October 19. She was traveling behind a 2012 Honda Civic operated by Sabine Jabuski, 41, of Woodbury, who was in slow-moving traffic. The front end of Barreto-Sandoval’s vehicle hit the rear bumper of Jabuski’s.

Jabuski complained of neck pain but was not transported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Barreto-Sandoval was issued an infraction for operating a motor vehicle without a license and a verbal warning for traveling an unreasonable distance apart.

Commercial Truck Hit Porsche

Newtown Police report Nicholas Goodwin, 49, of Torrington, operating a 2007 Freightliner Conventional, was traveling southbound on Hawleyville Road at 11:39 am October 20. He was traveling behind a 2022 Porsche Macan operated by John Smith, 58, of Brookfield. Smith stopped at the intersection of the Interstate 84 West exit 9 on-ramp. Goodwin did not stop in time and the front of Goodwin’s vehicle made contact with the rear of Smith’s.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Goodwin was issued a written warning for following too close and causing an accident with a commercial vehicle.

Fender Bender In Lot

Newtown Police report Isabella Jiminez, 23, of Newtown, operating a 2015 Chevrolet K1500, was backing out of a private parking space at 30 Church Hill Road. A 2013 Subaru Impreza owned by Kamila Hussan of Danbury was parked and unoccupied in the same lot. The right rear corner of Jiminez’ vehicle struck the front left corner of Hussan’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

One Injured In Collision

Newtown Police report Colleen Bryant, 58, of Newtown operating a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze, was attempting to turn left onto South Main Street from a stop sign on Cold Spring Road at 12:41 pm October 20. Amanda Medrano, 33, of Bridgeport, operating a 2019 Toyota Highlander, was traveling southbound on South Main Street. Bryant’s vehicle impacted Medrano’s vehicle.

Police say a passenger in Medrano’s vehicle suffered a possible injury but was not transported to Danbury Hospital. Both vehicles were towed.

Bryant was issued an infraction for failure to yield from a stop sign.

Hit Pole And Guardrail

Newtown Police report Alyssa Bartlett, 26, of Shelton, operating a 2020 Nissan Sentra, was traveling westbound on High Rock Road at 1:49 am October 21. Bartlett went off the roadway to the right and hit a utility pole, before crossing back over the roadway and striking a guardrail.

Bartlett was transported to Danbury Hospital with possible injuries. Her vehicle was towed.

Bartlett was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane and traveling too fast for conditions.

Backed Into Corvette

Newtown Police report Harald Viesel, 59, of Kingstown, R.I., operating a 2010 Ford Edge, was parked in the rear parking lot of 45 Main Street at 3:07 pm October 22. While backing from the parking space, the passenger side of his vehicle made contact with the driver’s side of a 1979 Chevrolet Corvette parked in the adjacent spot.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Collision Near Tow Truck

Newtown Police report Jessica Moura, 49, of Newtown, operating a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 7:55 am October 23. Robert Hammond, 73, of Newtown, operating a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, was traveling northbound on South Main Street and stopped for a tow truck in the process of hooking up a disabled vehicle. Moura did not stop in time, and rear-ended Hammond’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was mentioned in the report.

Crash In Intersection

Newtown Police report Jermain Cora, 46, of Bridgeport, operating a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado, was traveling on Wasserman Way at 5:25 pm October 23. Alexis Hoffman, 28, of Shelton, operating a 2016 Volvo XC90, was traveling on Wasserman Way. While turning onto Berkshire Road, Cora’s vehicle struck Hoffman’s.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Cora was given a written warning for failure to operate in the proper lane. Hoffman was issued a written warning for operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

Three Car Collision

Newtown Police report George Mattas, 46, of Long Island City, New York, was traveling southbound on South Main Street at 4:13 pm October 24. He was traveling behind a 2008 Honda Civic operated by Rohan Stuart, 28, of Bridgeport, which was behind a 2019 Subaru Forester operated by Stephen Kraska, 23, of New Fairfield. Kraska and Stuart both stopped at the traffic light at the intersection of South Main Street and Meadow Brook Road. Mattas did not stop in time, and his vehicle struck Stuart’s which was pushed into Kraska’s.

No injuries were reported. None of the vehicles were towed.

Mattas was issued an infraction for following too close. Stuart was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended driver’s license.

Both Vehicles Towed

Newtown Police report Dominica Tenecela, 17, of Danbury, operating a 2020 Honda HR-V, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road at the intersection with Main Street at 9:28 am October 27. Joan Treadwell, of Brookfield, operating a 2016 Hyundai Elantra, was traveling southbound on Main Street in the area of Church Hill Road. Police say Tenecela entered into the southbound lane of travel on Main Street when it was unsafe to do so and the front end of Treadwell’s vehicle struck the right side of Tenecela’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed.

Tenecela was issued an infraction for operating a motor vehicle without a license and failure to obey a stop sign.

Rear-Ended At Red Light

Newtown Police report James Bayles, 71, of Newtown, operating a 2011 Honda CR-X, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 11 am October 28. He was traveling behind a 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe operated by Scott Mendell, 57, of Newtown. Mendell stopped for traffic at a red light at the intersection of Button Shop Road and Bayles rear-ended him.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Bayles received a verbal warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Evading Responsibility

Newtown Police report Maria Dasilva, 61, of Newtown, operating a 2020 Kia Soul, was attempting to park in a marked parking spot in the Caraluzzi’s parking lot at 4:38 pm October 29. While parking, her vehicle struck an unoccupied Honda CR-V owned by Edward Dallwein of Apex, N.C., that was parked in an adjacent space. Dasilva left the lot but a witness observed the incident and provided vehicle information to Dallwein.

Following an investigation, Dasilva was charged with evading responsibility for an accident causing property damage. She was given a court date of November 7 in Danbury Superior Court.
