“As you know, for the whole month of October we have been consumed with Charlotte’s Web,” said Hawley Elementary School Principal Jo-Ann Peters at the final wrap-up for the One School One Read program.

Teachers and staff dressed as characters from the book, which is about Wilbur, a pig who learns of his most likely fate. His friend Charlotte, a spider, begins to weave webs that say words to make sure the farmer will not touch Wilbur. Eventually Wilbur becomes a “famous pig.”

The last scene students at the school witnessed was of Wilbur and Charlotte at a county fair.

Due to the lifecycle of a spider, Wilbur learns his friend will soon die after she lays her egg sack.

Ms Peters said the One School One Read program was successful. She said she had conversations with students who told her about the different things they learned at home and in the classroom.

“It was amazing,” said Ms Peters.

Students chose their favorite character from the book to create head pieces or dress up as, and wore costumes because the event took place on October 31, Halloween. Students also voted in their classrooms for their favorite character, and Templeton, the sarcastic rat in the book, won.

The play performed for the students was not the final Charlotte’s Web-based event for the students, but it was the final one in the school. Edmond Town Hall also had a showing of the 2006 movie by the same title on November 3. Ms Peters said it was nearly a packed house for the event. Students, parents, and teachers filled the theater, and balcony seating was available for more room.
