Scarecrow Contest Winners Announced

By Eliza Hallabeck

The winners for the Newtown Middle School Scarecrow Sculpture contest were announced at the school on Wednesday, November 5.

The sculptures were set up October 25, and they were deconstructed on October 31. Students from the art enrichment classes, students in the Discovery GATES program, and other student volunteers created the scarecrows in groups ranging from two to five participants.

The winner of the contest was the scarecrow called PacMan created by William Carr, Jay DeStories, Bradley Fish, and Michael Vabner. The scarecrow that came in second place was called Scooby Doo and it was created by Kimmy Gates and Jane Sclafani. The Darth Vader scarecrow came in third place, and it was created by Wyatt Depuy, Christopher Erikson, Collin Hall, Pieter Martino, and Alex Roche.

The scarecrow creation of Mortimer’s Morsels, built by Alex LaCroce, Ashley Malia, Elana Sadlon, and David Swigart, also received many votes, as did the scarecrow called Death By Chocolate, created by Danielle Chaloux, Georgia Contois, Caitlin Gibney, and Stephanie Roman.

Each group of students had to keep their creations designed to meet specifications. While building the scarecrows, the students could spend no more than $20, the scarecrows had to be large enough to be visible from the street, and they had to be able to withstand inclement weather.

While the scarecrows were up, voting was open for residents to choose their favorite scary creation. For each vote cast, residents had to pay $1, and the money raised will go to the charity of the three top winners’ choosing. The charities have yet to be chosen by the winners of the contest, and the money was not counted by the time this issue of The Bee went to press. Further information on the NMS Scarecrow Contest will be published in next week’s edition of The Bee.
