Newtown High School’s football team jumped out to a 21-0 lead after one quarter of play and coasted to a 42-6 victory over host Stratford on a cool, crisp November 7 evening. The Nighthawks improved to 9-0 and the Red Devils fell to 5-4.

Julian Dunn caught a pair of Jacob Burden touchdown throws – one from nine yards out to open the scoring and another on an 11-yard play for the final points of the first half; NHS led 35-0 at the break. Jaret DeVellis ran for two TDs, finding the end zone on a 13-yard score to make it 14-0, and adding an 11-yard scamper for Newtown’s only second-half touchdown, early in the third quarter.

The Nighthawks seized control of the game early on as the defense had another dominating performance and Nick Rubino and Troy Frangione added scoring plays. Late in the first, with Newtown ahead 14-0, Frangione had a long carry to bring the ball to the one yard line; Rubino cashed in on the next play, as time expired. Frangione, in his first game back after being sidelined with an illness, caught a five-yard TD pass in the second quarter.

Newtown returns home on Friday, November 14, when New Fairfield visits Blue & Gold Stadium for a Senior Night contest beginning at 7 pm. Read more about the win over Stratford and a look ahead to the New Fairfield contest in the November 14 print edition of The Bee.
