Students in different grade levels were matched up in small groups or pairs to read their favorite fall or Halloween stories at Hawley Elementary School on Friday, October 30, by flashlight, with the lights turned off in the classrooms.

The reading event was the first at the school, according to Hawley lead teacher Keri Snowden.

“We wanted a way to celebrate, but in a way that supports what we are doing in the school,” said Ms Snowden.

Different ages were paired together for the day. In one classroom first graders and kindergarten students read together, and in a classroom down the hall fourth graders read with kindergarteners. Ms Snowden said all the grade levels were being mixed and matched for the reading event.

Ms Snowden said the school is hoping to build relationships between the grade levels.

“This was a fun way to start to build that up,” said Ms Snowden.

Students brought in their favorite fall or Halloween book for the the event or chose books already in the classrooms.

Hawley first grader Piper Feli, left, and kindergartener Lia Spremullo read Bear Feels Scared by flashlight last Friday.
Hawley Elementary School students, from left, kindergartener Ava Keil, and fourth graders Sara Premus and Makenzie Del Poso read Little Dog Lost by flashlight on Friday, October 30.
