It has been more than 60 years since the Korean War ended, but there was a last detail that remained to be accomplished for Stanley Polcyn, a US Navy veteran who served with distinction in that Southeast Asian conflict.

In November 7 ceremonies held in the Alexandria Room at Edmond Town Hall, Mr Polcyn received four medals for his service which were due him, but that he had never received.

Representing the federal government, Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty presented to Mr Polcyn those medals, putting some closure on his service with the US military.

Those medals and commendations are the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the 50

Anniversary Korean War Service Medal.

Mr Polcyn joined the US Navy Reserve in 1948 at age 18 and served on active military duty as a flight engineer during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952.

After his grandchildren had interviewed him about his military service for a school project, Mr Polcyn contacted Representative Esty for assistance in obtaining the four medals.

“I feel incredibly honored that my office was able to help secure the military awards that Mr Polcyn earned serving our country… I’m grateful to Mr Polcyn for his service and I am glad he will be able to share his legacy with his grandchildren,” Ms Esty said. Mr Polcyn has 15 grandchildren.

Mr Polcyn thanked Rep Esty for the presentation.

First Selectman Pat Llodra observed, “He put himself in harm’s way to serve others.”

At the ceremonies, Boy Scout Troop 270 presented the colors, and Brownie Troop 50440 led those attending in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Also, Mrs Llodra introduced Town Clerk Debbie Aurelia Halstead as the town’s new veterans information specialist.

In that capacity, Ms Halstead will serve as the point of contact in Newtown for veterans who are seeking information on veteran-related matters.
