The Newtown Bee’s “Get To Know” series looks at local buildings and properties. Is there a building you would like to “get to know?” E-mail eliza@thebee.com with suggestions.

This week, Madison Properties Property Manager Moses Waldman answered questions about the brick building located at 75 Glen Road in Sandy Hook.

In what year was it purchased or built? 1831.

Who or what entity owns or oversees the building? Madison Properties.

How large is the building? 83,394 square feet.

How many rooms does the building contain? There is no fixed number of rooms. Space is combined and divided as needed.

What purpose/purposes does the building serve? Offices and flex use, with spaces ranging from as little as a 100 square-feet up to 10,000 square feet.

What is one interesting fact about the building? It was originally a lumber mill. The building housed a huge wooden water wheel that was powered by water diverted from the Pootatuck River. Although the wheel is not there, the power of moving water is still being used to generate electricity for the region via a hydroelectric plant.

What is the most common question you get about the building and the answer? Where is all that water going? Once past the hydro plant the water is discharged within the tall masonry structure that formerly housed the wheel, through which it flows back to the Pootatuck River.
