George DeWitt Wight Ferris, Sr, 101, of Danbury died November 8 at Danbury Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Phebe (Kellogg) Ferris. Mr Ferris was born in Newtown, July 2, 1912, son of Ophelia (Thornhill) and Charles D.  Ferris, and was the last of the Ferris family to be home-birthed at the family homestead on Route 302.

His two sons, George D.W. Ferris II, and his wife Elizabeth Marsan-Ferris, of Newtown and Robert K. Ferris, MD, and his wife Kathryn Gates-Ferris, of Bogota, N.J., six grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews survive, Mr Ferris. In addition to his wife and parents, an infant son John Booth Ferris; his brothers Charles David Ferris, Donald Ferris, and William Ferris; and his sisters Florence Atkins, Sarah Banks Metcalf, and Louise Blakeman predeceased him.

He received a BS from Trinity College in Hartford and then was a cum laude graduate of Connecticut College of Pharmaceuticals in New Haven, with a BS in pharmacy. The Ferrises moved to Danbury in 1945 and he worked at the former Smith Pharmacy and Culhane Pharmacy in Danbury. He worked at English Drug in Bethel for 33 years, then worked part-time at the Georgetown Pharmacy until his retirement in 1986. He prided himself that he did not ever miss more than three or four days of work and that he was not late more than four or five times, even during blizzards.

Mr Ferris was greatly admired for his simple, dependable nature, and love for his family. He was an avid genealogist and was always ready to share old-time quotes.

The funeral took place at the Hull Funeral Home, Danbury, November 12. Burial was at Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.
