In keeping with a majority of the results this season, Newtown High School’s field hockey team scored a lopsided victory to close out the regular slate, posting an 8-1 triumph over Brookfield on November 4. It was Newtown’s third win over the Bobcats, and second by an 8-1 count. The Nighthawks bounced back from their lone setback, a 3-1 loss at Pomperaug of Southbury two days earlier.

“It was a perfect game to regroup, reset, and get back on the right path for the playoffs. The nice thing about this game is all 23 rostered varsity players saw ample time. I loved that a few younger kids put up assists and goals on the board for their first time in a varsity game,” Coach Ellen Goyda said.

Morgan Melillo scored her first varsity goal and Erin Shah and Sarah Savenelli had their first varsity assists.

Katie Goyda had two goals and an assist, and Reagan Schoen recorded two goals and a pair of assists. Izzy Butler notched a goal and two assists, Sarah Kick tallied a goal and an assist, and Sarah Miller closed out the scoring putting one in when she was fed a beautiful pass by Savenelli.

Newtown, the top seed in the South-West Conference North Division Tournament, earned playoff home game against New Milford on Wednesday, November 11. The Nighthawks defeated the Green Wave 6-2 and 4-1 during the season, but fell 2-1 in overtime under a rainfall. Goyda scored in regulation.
