Women Involved in Newtown recently held elections for its next board of directors.

Cyndy DaSilva and Mandy Monaco will serve as co-presidents for the 2016-17 season. Also elected were Colette Ercole, vice president; Cindy Gallatin, treasurer; Jen Scarangella, secretary; and Ms Monaco as publicist.

WIN is a nonprofit organization made up of women of all ages from all over Newtown who are interested in working together for the goodwill of the community and neighboring communities.

WIN works as a group on various projects throughout the year, with individual members choosing where their help is best suited. Meetings are once monthly, September to June, usually on the second Monday of the month at 7:30 pm. Meetings are at a different member's home each month, and members take turns providing food and drinks.

New members are welcome to join at any time during the year.

For additional information contact Ms Monaco, 203-426-5600, or visit the organization's website at winct.org.

Thanksgiving Baskets

WIN is asking for help with its annual Thanksgiving Basket Program. For more than 40 years WIN has run this program in conjunction with Newtown Social Services to ensure that Newtown's needy families have food for the holiday season.

The group this year is working to get 60-plus families adopted by classrooms, businesses, families, clubs, or individuals that will provide each family with food for their Thanksgiving dinner along with staple foods and supplies to help them through the entire holiday season.

Those donating are asked to check labels on each box, bag, or canned donation. Items that have expired should not be forwarded to the WIN program. Anything outdated will be thrown out.

Food for the adopted families should be dropped off at the hall of Newtown United Methodist Church (entry through the building's lower level), 92 Church Hill Road, on Friday, November 18, between noon and 4 pm.

WIN is also seeking people, families, groups, organizations, and businesses to adopt these needy families.

Contact Mrs Monaco for additional information, 203-426-5600.

"We at WIN have been overwhelmed by Newtown's generosity in years past and hope that we can carry on this important tradition," she said.

While WIN is grateful for every donation is receives for the Thanksgiving Basket program, not all can be used. Members ask those who are planning to make a donation to check expiration dates on any food donations. Outdated items will be discarded. (Bee file photo)
WIN is in the midst of working on its annual Thanksgiving Basket Program. "Baskets" - which in many cases are sturdy boxes and bags - are filled with groceries, home goods, cleaning supplies, and even hygiene items donated by local individuals and organizations, and then given to local families in need. The program benefits about 100 families, each ranging in size from one to six members.
