The Garden Club of Newtown will hold its annual Holiday Greens Sale from 9 am to noon on Saturday, December 5, at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street.

This popular annual event is the club’s main fundraiser, and members plan all year by collecting and drying plant materials from their gardens and gathering pinecones and a wide variety of evergreens and other items to be used in creating and decorating evergreen wreaths and tabletop arrangements for the holiday season.

The members always emphasize the beauty and bounty of nature  in their individualized arrangements by incorporating such fresh plant materials as holly, winterberry, boxwood and a wide assortment of other evergreens from their own gardens.  Bundles of fresh, loose greens will also be available to supplement personal home decorating accents.

In addition to wreaths, the many creative members of the club design and create such always popular items as tabletop boxwood trees and evergreen centerpieces, some with candles, that have been traditionally used to enhance the holiday home décor and bring the inviting scents of the season indoors.

The sale will also include firestarter boxes and an assortment of handmade gift items and other unique treasures to brighten the holidays and facilitate your gift-giving.

A special feature of this year’s sale will be the appearance of Newtown resident Sydney Eddison, a noted gardening lecturer and author. Ms Eddison will be signing copies of her latest book, Where We Walk: poems rooted in the soil of New England. Released in August, copies of the book will be available for sale on December 5.

The Garden Club of Newtown will use profits from this fundraiser to contribute to the community in numerous ways, including scholarships for Newtown graduates through contributions to Newtown Scholarship Association.

Among other local projects supported by the proceeds of this fundraiser are the maintenance of the gardens at The Matthew Curtiss House, The Blue Star Highway Memorial Marker and Barb’s Trail as well as support for The Victory Garden at Fairfield Hills.

An early arrival is recommended for the best selection at this popular community event.
