Four Charges

A Newtown woman turned herself in to police earlier this month after learning of a warrant for her arrest.

April L. Schettino, 40, was charged with three counts of issuing a bad check and one count of larceny-third degree, after surrendering at Newtown Police Department on November 6. The arrest stemmed from a complaint the police department received from Newtown Savings Bank in September, according to the police report.

Schettino was processed and released on a promise to appear, with a court date set for November 19.

Short Stop

A 2008 Audi TT2, operated by Russell C. Gayle, 21, of Jarvisburg, N.C., was traveling westbound on Berkshire Road, directly behind a 2010 Mazda 3i, around 9:20 am, Saturday, November 7.

As both vehicles approached the intersection with Toddy Hill Road, the traffic light signal turned red. The Mazda stopped. The Audi attempted to stop, but could not before the front end of the Audi hit the rear end of the Mazda. There was minor damage to both vehicles.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time. No injuries were reported.

Gayle was issued a verbal warning for failure to keep a reasonable distance.

Larceny-Sixth

Robert J. Rudemyer, 47, of Carmel, N.Y., was arrested by Newtown police on November 9, on an active arrest warrant.

Rudemyer was charged with larceny-sixth degree, according to the police report.

He was released on a written promise to appear, and given a November 24 court date.

Failure To Yield

A 2011 Toyota Sienna LE, operated by Julie Anne Olson, 17, of Newtown, was traveling northbound in the left turn only lane on South Main Street approaching Sugar Street around 1:32 pm Saturday, November 14.

At the same time, a 2019 Jeep Compass Latitude, operated by Jessie Nezvesky, 27, of Newtown, was traveling south on Main Street, also approaching the intersection with Sugar Street.

The Jeep drove straight into the intersection. The Sienna drove into the intersection to make a left turn onto Sugar Street, and the right side of the Sienna collided with the right front corner of the Jeep.

No injuries were reported on scene. Both drivers, and a passenger in the Compass, were all wearing seat belts.

Olson was issued a verbal warning for failure to yield right of way while making a left turn.

Failure To Obey Traffic Signal

A 2007 Volkswagen Beetle convertible, operated by Ingrid M. DeAngelis, 57, of Sandy Hook, was traveling north on South Main Street/Route 25 in the right northbound lane, approaching the intersection with Button Shop Road, around 5:45 pm Monday, November 16.

The traffic control signal at the intersection was green for traffic traveling north and south on South Main Street.

A 2006 Chevrolet Silverado K2500 pickup truck, operated by John M. Gillis, 55, of Trumbull, was exiting the parking lot of Plaza South, 266-274 South Main Street, crossing South Main Street, to enter Button Shop Road. The traffic control signal at the intersection was red for traffic exiting the parking lot and on Button Shop Road.

As the Chevrolet crossed the right northbound travel lane of South Main Street, the front end of the Beetle struck the passenger side of the truck.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

DeAngelis reported back, leg, and arm pain and was transported by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to a hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Botsford Fire Rescue firefighters also responded to the crash.

The Volkswagen was towed from the scene. The Silverado was driven away.

Gillis was issued an infraction for failure to obey a traffic signal.
