To the Editor:

The Newtown Cultural Arts Commission is looking for a new member.

We are a collaborative Commission. Everyone who attends our meetings, Commission members and members of the public, all sit around one table (when we are not meeting via Zoom.) Although only Commission members may vote, we look for ideas and energies from everyone who attends our meetings.

Because six of the current members are Democrats, the new member must be either a registered Republican, an Independent, or a non-affiliated voter.

The Commission runs the Newtown Arts Festival each September, which attracts 5000-plus attendees each year. From the proceeds of the festival we award three scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are majoring in the arts and two grants to artists or organizations that bring arts to the community.

This year we also supported the Doors of Fairfield Hills, eight “doors” created by four Newtown artists on display at Washington Square at Fairfield Hills (just off Keating Farms Road).

Our Facebook page provides area arts calendars as well as highlights of the arts.

We meet on the first Thursday of the month.

If you are interested in joining the Commission, please send a letter of interest and a resume to susan.marcinek@newtown-ct.gov.

Laura E. Lerman

Chairman, Newtown Cultural Arts Commission

55 Main Street, Newtown November 24, 2020
