Schoolwide Competition Collects Food

Roughly 3,500 items of food were collected by Reed Intermediate School students during three weeks of a competition to collect food to donate to the Salvation Army Food Pantry, located at Town Hall South on Main Street.
The food was collected and dropped off on Monday, November 24, at the food pantry. Seven vehicles took two trips to transfer the food from the school to the food pantry. Matt Brown and Lara Brown, the co-advisors for the student counsel, which oversaw the competition, said each homeroom tried to raise as much food as they could to donate.
Students brought food in to their homerooms, and the winning top donating homeroom gets to choose the theme of Decemberâs School Spirit Day.
Dina Mastroniâs homeroom came in first place by collecting 295 food items, Petrice DiVanoâs homeroom came in second place by collecting 235 food items, and Jessica Fonovicâs homeroom came in third place by collecting 224 food items.
Mr Brown and Ms Brown said many people helped to collect the food, and they included Kelly Marcoux, Al Finelli, Tim McGuire, Peter Berson, Missy Dimiglio.
Mr Brown said this was the first year the school collected food during a competition, but food was collected last year. Last year, he said, all of the food items collected fit in one vehicle.
