Newtown High School's football team will host Shelton in the Class L State quarterfinals on Tuesday, November 28; kickoff at Blue & Gold Stadium is at 6:30 pm. Newtown is the No. 4 seed and Shelton the No. 5 team in the bracket.

Newtown finished the regular season with an 8-2 record and Shelton went 7-3. The teams had one common opponent — Shelton's Southern Connecticut Conference rival West Haven — and both lost by ten points in their respective matchups. NHS fell 41-31 at home on October 27 and Shelton lost 31-21 on September 29.

The winner will face either No. 1 Naugatuck or No. 8 Darien in the semifinals (site of the higher seed) on Sunday, December 3, at 12:20 pm. The other side of the bracket features No. 2 New Canaan against No. 7 Killingly and No. 3 Maloney taking on No. 6 South Windsor. The championship game will be Saturday, December 9, at Arute Field in New Britain or Rentschler Field in East Hartford (time to be determined).

NHS and Shelton have become familiar with each other in recent years with four close contests. No. 7 Shelton defeated No. 2 and host Newtown 21-20 in the 2022 Class L quarters. The teams also met in the 2021 regular season when Shelton prevailed 31-28, in 2019 when Newtown won 34-24, and 2017 when Shelton came out on top 35-28.
