BLOOMFIELD – With winter weather rapidly approaching, The Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, Inc. offers advice in caring for your dog during the winter months. Roberta Kaman, Fidelco’s co-founder and director of Animal Husbandry, gives the following dog care tips.

eHypothermia – Like humans, hypothermia poses great risk for dogs. Severe shivering is a sure sign of hypothermia and dogs should be immediately brought inside and wrapped in blankets until the shivering stops.

eAnti-freeze – Dogs like the sweet taste of antifreeze and even small doses can be lethal. Seek immediate help from your veterinarian if you suspect that your dog has ingested antifreeze.

eChemicals and salt – Chemicals can cause severe foot pad burning. Avoid walking your dog through treated areas or use one of the commercially-available products for coating your dog’s foot pads.

eCars and dogs – Never leave your dog in your car during very cold spells. Use the same care with your dog that you do with your children.

eIn the house – Provide a warm place for your dog to sleep when it’s inside. Keep them away from drafts and other cold spots and, if necessary, give them a padded dog bed or blanket.

“These simple precautions can help keep your dog safe and healthy through the winter,” said Kaman. “Staying aware of your dog’s health when it’s cold will pay dividends when the weather warms up.”

Fidelco is a Connecticut-based charity with clients in 33 states and three provinces in Canada.
