Discovery Museum’s Two Newest Exhibitions Promise Fun For All Ages

BRIDGEPORT — The Discovery Museum is hosting two entertaining new exhibits through December 31: “Cool Moves: The Artistry of Motion” and “Fun 2, 3, 4: all about a number of things!”

“Cool Moves: The Artistry of Motion” has 14 interactive exhibits. Activities range from changing the course of a mini-tornado to dancing around a giant kiosk to create a light and sound show triggered by numerous motion detectors. The wide range of activities is certain to give visitors a new appreciation for the beauty of motion.

Other exhibits are a ripple tank, “Swinging Art,” “Turbulent Orbs,” “Three-Wheeled Racers,” a giant pendulum, “Crazy Pendulums,” “Wind Over Water,” “Animals in Motion,” “Visible Sound Strings,” an Artistry of Motion video, “Windy Wonders,” and an air instrument.

Whether it’s measuring, graphing or estimating, “Fun, 2, 3, 4: all about a number of things!” will help visitors apply math to everyday activities and have fun while doing so. Kids will learn how to double their allowance — and see and feel just how much a penny a day doubled for 12 days compares to a dollar a day.

Seventeen exhibits will keep visitors of all ages busy like the Aztecs, partner for a Time Challenge, playing the Coo Curves computer game or Double. Other exhibits are “Fabulous Features,” “How long is the dino?” “How many is a million?” “How do you measurer up?” “How many hands high is a horse?” “Math Bloopers,” “Math Around the World” posters, “Measurement Factory,” “Millimeter Mystery,” “Super Bowl” and “Weigh Out.”

The museum also has daily planetarium shows. The children’s show, Wonderful Sky, perfect for ages seven and under, can be seen at 1 pm weekdays and 2 pm Saturdays and Sundays. Rock on Mars! suitable for ages 8 and up, is shown at 3:30 pm weekdays and at 1 and 3 pm Saturdays and Sundays. Rock On Mars! takes viewers on a 3D journey across the Martian landscape with the twin Mars Exploration rovers Spirit and Opportunity.

The Museum’s CineMuse high-definition theater also shows five short films Monday through Saturday and four on Sunday afternoons.

The Discovery Museum is at 4450 Park Avenue on the Fairfield-Bridgeport border, one mile south of Merritt Parkway Exit 47. General admission is $8.50 for adults, $7 for students, kids and seniors, and free for children under five.

Hours are 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 pm. The museum is open most Monday holidays. For more information, visit DiscoveryMuseum.org or call 203-372-3521.
