The Greatest Town On Earth

To the Editor:

Just before the November 22nd food drive in front of Big Y supermarket, I must admit I was nervous.  We only had two turkeys in our freezer!  The Bee printed my concern in a letter to the editor a couple of days before the drive.

The outpouring from the citizens of Newtown was unbelievable. Newtowners were hand delivering turkeys to FAITH for several days afterwards. Coupled with the turkeys collected by the Sandy Hook and Hawleyville fireman we ended up with over 100 turkeys.

Everyone and anyone who desired a Thanksgiving turkey (with fixings) got one!

This should have not come as a surprise to anyone, especially me.  For 32 years the citizens of Newtown have supported us. For 14 straight years the Newtown fireman’s food drive, under the leadership of Karen Halstead (et al.), has been a critical factor in stocking our shelves.

Toss in the volunteers of the Ambulance Corps, the feeding of the volunteers by My Place and Carminuccio's, Newtown churches, Newtown schools,  FAITH volunteers, the Lions Club, and others, demonstrates why this is the greatest town on earth.

Happy Holidays.
