Mary          Barkley

Mary (Canfield) Wilson Barkley, 89, formerly of Heritage Village, died November 30 at Laurel Ridge Health Center in Ridgefield. She was the widow of Charles H. Wilson and Peyton Barkley.

Mrs Barkley was born in Waterbury on June 6, 1915, daughter of the late Edward J. and Mary (Heffernan) Canfield.

She leaves her daughter, Maureen Wilson of Newtown; two sons, David Wilson of Intervale, N.H., and Jack Wilson of Newport, Maine; her sister, Dorothy Rigazio of Watertown; two grandsons; her granddaughter; and her great-grandson.

She was raised in Watertown where she attended St John School and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury. She lived in Newport, R.I., during World War II. She returned to Watertown in 1945 and lived there until moving to Florida in 1962, where she lived in Pompano Beach and Del Ray Beach for 25 years, before returning to Connecticut and settling in Heritage Village.

Over the years, she was employed by Chase Brass & Copper; The Watertown Bank & Trust, which later became Colonial Bank; and attorney Sherman Slavin. She was the first woman council member in the Town of Watertown. She was a past communicant of St John the Evangelist Church in Watertown. She enjoyed playing bridge and was active with the St John School Association.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 3, at 8:15 am, from Hickcox Funeral Home, 195 Main Street, Watertown, to St John the Evangelist Church for Mass at 9 am.

Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Platt Road, Watertown.

Calling hours were scheduled at the funeral home on Thursday, December 2, from 6 to 8 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St John School, 21 Academy Hill Road, Watertown CT 06795.
