Lists Scholarships

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.

The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships.

If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP, the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060, or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

National Federation of the Blind — Various college scholarships in amounts of $3,000 to $12,000 will be awarded to highly qualified blind students though this national program. All applicants must be pursuing or planning to pursue a full-time postsecondary course of study in the fall of 2005. The awards will be based on academic excellence, community service, and financial need. Applications and a list of requirements for each scholarship are available in the Career Center. The deadline is March 31.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund — A national fund for scholarships for graduating high school seniors of Hispanic heritage who are US citizens or legal permanent residents. Students must be enrolled full-time in a US accredited college or university for the 2005-06 academic year. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate financial need. The criteria for selections are academic record, financial need, community service, and personal qualities. Applications are available at www.hsf.net or in the Career Center. The deadline for completed forms is December 15.

Winning Characteristics National Scholarship — Seniors are eligible for one of five one-time $1,000 scholarship awards through participation in the Making College Count program at their high school. The program focuses on seven winning characteristics: communication skills, organization, leadership, logic, effort, group skills, and entrepreneurship. Interested applicants should go to www.makingitcount.com/scholarship in January for more details.

Connecticut/United States Junior Chamber International Scholarship — Two $200 scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors in Connecticut who plan to further their education at an accredited institution of higher learning. These award winners will have their applications forwarded to the US Senate Foundation to compete for 15 $1,000 national scholarships. The Career Center has applications. Applications must be postmarked by December 31.

New England Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers Annual Scholarship (NEACRAO) — Three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to three high school graduates who will enroll in a NEACRAO member institution in the fall. One scholarship will be awarded to a senior who attends a private four-year college; a second to a senior who attends a public four-year college; and a third to a graduate who attends a community college. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and have participated in extracurricular activities. A list of NEACRAO-member schools is available on the website at www.neacrao.org. All applications must be submitted to the Career Center the for nomination process by February 10.

Prom Guide Ambassadors Only Scholarship — One $1,000 scholarship from the Ambassadors Only program will be awarded to a high school senior. The program is designed to collect ideas through a series of online forums. Interested students should visit www.promguide.com for details. The Career Center has basic information.

Patrick Kerr Skateboard Scholarship — Four scholarships, one in the amount of $5,000 and three for $1,000, will be awarded to the winners of this essay contest. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors who are US citizens with a GPA of at least 2.5 who will enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at a four-year college/university by fall 2005. Students who have been actively promoting skateboarding in their community will be given special consideration although the scholarship is awarded without regard to skateboarding skill. Information is available at www.skateboardsholarship.com and in the Career Center. Completed packets must be postmarked by April 20.

Sammy Awards 2005 — The got milk?/Milk Mustache campaign in partnership with USA Today recognizes 25 graduating high school student athletes throughout the nation with a $7,500 scholarship for their achievements in academics, athletics, community service, and leadership. Winners will receive an all-expense paid trip to Disney World and an opportunity to be pictured in a special congratulatory Milk Mustache ad in an issue of USA Today. Applicants must apply online at www.whymilk.com by March 4.
