Five Ways To Say Goodbye

To the Editor:

During this unprecedented time so many families are experiencing loss of loved ones and often have to face the thought of them dying alone in a hospital or nursing home. Unable to hold hands, hug, or even visit dying relatives is something no one could ever have imagined before the pandemic. Yet it has become a heartbreaking reality; so this idea a friend shared with me when her mother recently passed away under hospice care may help someone.

Number one be sure to tell them, “I love you.” Number two, tell them, “I forgive you.” Number three, say, “I am sorry.” Number four, tell them, “I am thankful for you and to you…” Number five, “It is okay for you to leave us, even though we will miss you.”

These five topics can be expressed over a Zoom meeting or FaceTime call when one has no idea what to say, yet wishes for a meaningful interaction. I hope this helps someone.
