Girls Basketball

Opening Day

Thursday, December 7

versus St. Joseph’s

7 pm

In A Nutshell

The Nighthawks return even stronger than they were a year ago, when they captured their first South-West Conference championship, but a talent team and a deep bench won’t go far if the girls lose their focus.

Quotable

“The league is as strong as it’s ever been. I really think a lot of teams have a shot to win it all.”

- coach Gregg Simon

Christmas Tournament

The Nighthawks will once again participate in the Masuk Holiday Tournament. The first round games (Wednesday, December 27) will pit Newtown against Masuk and Joel Barlow against Warren Harding. The winners will square off in the tournament championship (Friday, December 29). The jayvee teams will also be participating in their own Masuk Holiday Tournament. On December 29, there will be the jayvee consolation game at 1 pm, the jayvee championship at 3 pm, the varsity consolation at 6 pm, and the varsity championship at 8 pm.

Swimming

Opening Day

Thursday, December 14

versus Pomperaug

7 pm

In A Nutshell

Having lost 13 swimmers from last year, the ‘Hawks may be at one of their lowest points in the nine years under coach Brian Reiff, but experience tells us to never count out the ability of this program to find a way.

Quotable

“We always find a way to find success because of the kinds of kids who gravitate towards the team.”

- coach Brian Reiff

Wrestling

Opening Day

Thursday, December 14

at Bunnell

7 pm

In A Nutshell

Nearly everyone is back – including those who won South-West Conference and CIAC Class L championships and there is no reason not to think the Nighthawks can once again find a whole lot of success on the mat again.

Quotable

“There are kids here who we have been working on for three years now. A lot of time and a lot of effort has been put into this program.”

- coach Alan Potter

Indoor Track

Opening Day

Saturday, December 16

at Reindeer Relays

Wilton High School

In A Nutshell

Graduation took a lot of talent away from the Nighthawks (four-time dash champion Janelle Tracy being the biggest blow) but the numbers are pretty good and coaches Marsha Caine and Carl Strait have lots of talent to work with.

Quotable

“The kids are working hard. This is a great group because there are the kids who are most dedicated.”

- coach Carl Strait

Boys Basketball

Opening Day

Thursday, December 14

at Brookfield

7 pm

In A Nutshell

The ‘Hawks best offensive threat is senior John Fiscella - but they hold a couple of wild cards in Andrew Smith and freshman Andrew Fiscella.

Quotable

“I really like these kids. They’re committed and focused. We’re trying to build from year-to-year.”

- coach John Quinn
