Glen Road Crash

Police report motorist Michael Silva, 25, of New Fairfield was driving a 1997 Saturn SL-2 on Glen Road about 5 pm December 2 when he braked for a deer that entered the road, causing the auto to go into a skid, ride over an embankment, cross a driveway, and then ride onto another embankment.

Mr Silva was not injured. No enforcement action was taken.

I-84 DUI

State police report they charged motorist Joseph Simonelli, 69, of Middlebury with driving under the influence about 12:35 am December 2 on eastbound Interstate-84, near Exit 9 in Hawleyville.

 After processing at the state police barracks in Southbury, state police released Simonelli on a $500 non-surety bond for a December 11 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Fairfield Hills Escape

State police report that two inmates of the Alpha House section of the Daytop substance abuse treatment program at Greenwich House at Fairfield Hills were reported missing from the premises about 7 am November 30.

State police said Rusty Sykes, 16, of Vernon, and Candice Wiedl, 17, of Bethel, had walked away from Alpha House, although they were under a state Department of Correction order to stay there.

Both inmates will be charged with first-degree escape when they are located, according to state police.

 

Multiple Offenses

State police report they charged a Brookfield man with four offenses early on the morning of November 29 on westbound Interstate 84, east of the Exit 10 off-ramp.

State police said they clocked motorist Scott P. Gruda, 38, driving between 80 and 86 miles per hour in a 65-mph zone. Also, Mr Gruda veered to the right four times, moving from the center lane to the right lane of three westbound lanes, state police said. State police said they followed Mr Gruda for more than 2,500 feet with their emergency lights flashing and siren sounding before he pulled over.

State police said Mr Gruda failed field sobriety testing.

State police charged him with driving under the influence, speeding, failure to drive in the established lane, and failure to obey an officer’s signal.

 After processing at the Southbury state police barracks, state police released Mr Gruda on a $500 non-surety bond for a December 18 appearance in Danbury Superior Court where he will face a judge.

Escapees

State police report that two inmates from the Daytop substance abuse treatment program at Greenwich House at Fairfield Hills left the premises about 8 pm November 29 and attempted to flee the area, but were apprehended by state Department of Correction (DOC) personnel on Mile Hill Road a short distance from Daytop.

Charged with first-degree escape were Thomas Barnes, 37, and Katherine Zultowski, 44, state police said. Barnes and Zultowski were held at a DOC facility in New Haven for appearances the following morning in Danbury Superior Court.

Stop-And-Go

State police report that while traveling in stop-and-go traffic on westbound Interstate 84 about 1,000 feet west of Exit 9 in Hawleyville about 9:50 am on November 29, a 2000 Ford Focus driven by Joanne Stage, 63, of Foster City, Calif., struck the rear end of a 1997 Ford van driven by Thomas F. Hennessey, 47, of Bantam. There were no injuries. State police said Stage was following too closely.

       

Check Charges

Newtown police said Southbury police charged James Gardner, 45, of Southbury December 7 on a Newtown arrest warrant listing charges of third-degree larceny and issuing a bad check in connection with a past incident involving a Newtown plant nursery.

Southbury police turned over Gardner to Newtown police, who held him on a $4,500 bond for an appearance later that day in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

Driving Incident

Police said they charged Ryan Miller, 21, of Danbury December 6 on charges of reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle while under suspension in connection with an incident on Sugar Street.

Police released Miller on a $50 bond for a December 20 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.
