Items From Estates At

Fairfield Auction, Sunday

Fairfield Auction will feature items from several estates in an estates auction to be held at the Church Hill Road gallery on Sunday, December 7. Previews will be offered on Saturday, December 6, from 1 to 6 pm, and on Sunday from 9 to 11 am. The sale will begin on Sunday at 11 am.

Included is a selection of American and European furniture, paintings, silver, clocks and carpets.

The sale will include more than 300 lots culled from local estates, including a tiger maple slant front desk from Newburyport, Mass. The somewhat diminutive desk is in original condition with the interior partly disassembled but present in its entirety.

From the same home is a Queen Anne drop leaf table in tiger maple with exceptional figuring, but some repairs as well as a tiger maple blanket chest. Other American furniture to be offered include a Sheraton secretary with bookcase top, an 18th Century pine corner cupboard, a bench made Chippendale-style cherry secretary with blind door top, and a selection of country chests, stands and chairs.

Among the European furniture to be sold is a large 19th Century Italian giltwood figural mirror, a neoclassical inlaid commode, a Dutch marquetry games table, a pair of circa 1880 ornately carved Italian armchairs, and an 18th Century French Louis XV provincial slant front lady’s desk.

Of particular note is a French Louis XV-style bed, circa 1900, with undulating side rails and extensive carving. Several French provincial work tables and a pine tall clock will also be sold.

Other items of interest include a Victorian cut glass and sterling silver mounted water pitcher measuring 17 inches high with London hallmarks dating it to 1900. Also going on the block will be a Tiffany Favrile vase measuring nine inches; several bronzes, including “La Verite,” signed Carrier Belleuse; clocks, including a mantel clock retailed at Tiffany’s; and a pair of Hessian andirons in good paint.

A five-liter Mettlach stein and a selection of vintage jewelry, including Tiffany, should also do well. An early pedal car, “the red dot,” should also drive up bidding.

Paintings include works by Hamilton Hamilton, Rudolph Calao, Samuel Frere and a genre sketch in the manner of Millet and initialed “J.F.M.” Prints and lithographs by Currier & Ives, Stow Wengenroth, Herbert Dicksee, Norman Rockwell, three by R.C. Gorman and five by Fritz Scholder will also be offered.
