Gaston Earns First Team Honors

Newtown High School alumnus Tara Gaston, a junior at Gettysburg College and member of the school’s soccer team, was recently named to the All-Centennial Conference First Team for the second time in three seasons.

Gaston was once again the top defensive player in Gettysburg’s back line, earning first-team all-conference accolades for the second consecutive season. A team co-captain this fall, she started all 17 matches and anchored a defense that allowed a school record-low 12 goals in almost 1,700 minutes of action. The Bullets managed seven shutouts on the year and ranked fourth in goals against average (0.65) in the conference. Gaston factored into the offensive side of the field as well, taking a dozen shots and finishing with a career-high two goals.

A three-year starter, Gaston has appeared in every single match on the soccer pitch in her career, guiding the defense to 25 shutouts over that span.

Gettysburg closed the season with a record of 5-6-6 overall, including 4-4-2 in the Centennial Conference. The Bullets set a school record with eight overtime contests in 2008 and posted ties with three NCAA Division III Tournament participants, including a scoreless decision with then-No. 1 Messiah College on Sept. 24.

Gaston, who is majoring in biology, is the daughter of Jim and Stephanie Gaston of Newtown.
