Vehicle Airborne

Newtown Police report Luis Molina, 16, of Danbury, operating a 2013 Toyota Corolla, was traveling eastbound on Wasserman Way at 10:54 pm November 17. Molina’s vehicle went off the road, hitting the end of a guardrail, which sent the vehicle airborne. Police say the vehicle landed on its driver’s side and then righted itself, coming to rest on all four wheels.

No injuries were reported, but Molina refused to be evaluated by EMS at the scene.

Molina was issued an infraction for operating a motor vehicle without a proper instructor.

Collision At Stop Sign

Newtown Police report Edward Tremonte, 76, of Brookfield, operating a 2015 Subaru Legacy, was stopped at a stop sign at the intersections of Obtuse Road and Hawleyville Road. Freitas De, 42, of Danbury, operating a 2005 Subaru Legacy, was traveling northbound on Hawleyville Road and negotiating a left curve in the roadway. Police say Tremonte made a right turn to go northbound on Hawleyville Road and the driver’s front fender of De’s vehicle struck the passenger’s side of Tremonte’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Tremonte’s vehicle was towed from the scene.

Tremonte was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right-of-way at a stop sign.

Claims Black Ice

Newtown Police report Pedro Gaspar, 40, of Danbury, operating a 2005 Lincoln Aviator, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 10:34 pm November 18. Gaspar stated he drove over a patch of black ice, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and slide into an embankment. Officers observed the vehicle facing south in the northbound lane with damage to the windshield, driver’s side doors, windows and front left tire.

No injuries were reported.

Failure To Grant Right-Of-Way

Newtown Police report Kimberly Vanpelt, 41, of Newtown, operating a 2014 Mercedes-Benz E3504m, was exiting a driveway on Sturges Road at 3:25 pm November 20. Annelise Donahue, 29, of Newtown, operating a 2018 Toyota Corolla, was traveling north on Sturges Road. Police say Vanpelt’s vehicle made contact with Donahue’s vehicle causing minor damage.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Vanpelt was given a verbal warning for failure to grant right-of-way at a private driveway.

Start Then Stop Causes Strike

Newtown Police report Gary Jackman, 59, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe, was traveling northeast on Key Rock Road at 5:37 pm November 21. He was traveling behind a 2016 BMW 340xi operated by Patricia Kaylor, 53, of Middlebury. Kaylor stopped at the intersection of Key Rock Road and Sugar Street, and Jackman stopped behind her. Police say Kaylor then began to pull forward onto Sugar Street, but then stopped when she saw another vehicle she did not see initially. Jackman’s vehicle struck Kaylor’s vehicle, front to rear.

No injuries were reported. Kaylor’s vehicle was towed from the scene after it would not start following the accident.

Jackman was given a verbal warning for following too closely.

Both Vehicles Towed

Newtown Police report Joseph Farrell, 76, of Newtown, operating a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, was stopped in a driveway on South Main Street, waiting to make a left turn onto the road, at 11:08 am November 22. Sylvia Pearsall, 48, of Middlebury, was traveling southbound on South Main Street. Police say Farrell drove into the roadway in front of Pearsall, and the front of Pearsall’s vehicle struck the rear of Farrell’s vehicle.

Both Farrell and Pearsall were treated by Newtown EMS on the scene for minor injuries. Both vehicles were towed.

Farrell was issued a written warning for failure to grant right-of-way while making a left hand turn.

Passing On The Right

Newtown Police report Brandon Capelo, 28, of Danbury, operating a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, was traveling southbound on Queen Street at 12 pm November 22. He was traveling behind a 2006 Honda Civic operated by Dorothea Went, 79, of Newtown. Police say Went stopped in the southbound travel lane before attempting to turn right into a parking lot. Capelo’s vehicle struck Went’s vehicle trying to pass on the right. The right front bumper of Capelo’s vehicle struck the left front fender of Went’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Capelo was issued a verbal warning for passing on the right.

No Registration, No Insurance

Newtown Police report Brian Guidi, 41, of Naugatuck, was arrested at 2:53 pm November 23 on the charges of operation of an unregistered motor vehicle, improper use of marker plates, and illegal operation of a motor vehicle without minimum insurance. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of December 8 in Danbury Superior Court.

Disorderly Conduct

Newtown Police arrested Samuel Smith, 52, of Newtown, at 5:15 pm November 24, on the charge of disorderly conduct. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of November 25 in Danbury Superior Court. No other details were provided.

BMW Hits Toyota

Newtown Police report Walter Cordova-Vargas, 30, of Danbury, operating a 2011 BMW 328xi, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 4:14 pm November 25. Daniel Johnson, 44, of Newtown, operating a 2006 Toyota RAV4, was stopped facing northbound on South Main Street, preparing to turn left. Police say Cordova-Vargas swerved right and the front left bumper of his vehicle struck the right rear bumper of Johnson’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Cordova-Vargas’ vehicle was towed due to disabling damage.

No enforcement action is mentioned in the report.

Improper Passing

Newtown Police report Makai Coleman, 16, of Newtown, operating a 2021 Honda Accord, was traveling westbound on Riverside Road at 3:34 pm November 26. He was traveling behind a 2003 Honda Pilot operated by Michael Long, 58, of Sandy Hook. Police say Coleman attempted to pass Long on the left in a no passing zone. Long swerved into the oncoming traffic lane and the rear driver’s side of his vehicle struck the passenger side of Coleman’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Coleman was issued an infraction for improper passing. Long was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Lost Key Fob

Newtown Police report an older, black Toyota key fob was found in the parking lot of the Paugussett State Forest on November 26. Anyone missing a Toyota key fob is encouraged to contact the Newtown Police Department.

Hit Stone Wall

Newtown Police report Collin Ouimette, 16, of Newtown, operating a 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS, was traveling north on Currituck Road at 2:39 pm November 27. While negotiating a slight left-hand curve, Ouimette’s vehicle lost traction in the rainy conditions and crossed over the southbound lane of travel, left the roadway and hit a stone wall. Police say upon hitting the wall, Ouimette’s vehicle spun around, rolled onto its passenger side and came to a rest with its front end facing south.

Ouimette was evaluated by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance for a minor injury but declined transport. The vehicle was towed.

He was issued an infraction for violation of motor vehicle operator restrictions for 16/17-year-olds, failure to keep right, and traveling too fast for conditions.

DUI Charge

Newtown Police arrested Hansel Merejildo, 42, of the Bronx, N.Y., at 10:14 pm November 26, on the charge of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of December 13 in Danbury Superior Court.
