Families United in Newtown (FUN), a local grassroots nonprofit dedicated to families with special needs children and especially those on the autism spectrum, recently held its third gathering centered around the calming art of yoga.

The organization under the leadership of founder Linda Jones and her family is now readying for FUN’s big pre-holiday celebration and year-end concert.

All local families interested in networking with other parents while their special needs children are engaging in recreation and social activities with Newtown High School National Honors Society volunteers are invited to the group’s pre-holiday gathering Sunday, December 8.

That event is happening from 3 to 5:30 pm in the high school cafetorium at 12 Berkshire Road, and is free for participants. Reservations are requested, however, to be sure there are adequate refreshments and that special guest Santa Claus knows how many gifts to bring.

To make a reservation, contact Ms Jones at 203-512-6284 or lindajones9763@sbcglobal.net.

The December 8 gathering will feature a visit from the “jolly old elf” himself and will have music, dancing, food, and a holiday craft activity. Entire families are welcome.

FUN is also in the planning stages for its Winter Benefit Concert, Saturday, December 28, at 6:30 pm. This event, which has no admission charge but requests a freewill donation instead, is being hosted by the cosponsoring Newtown United Methodist Church at 92 Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook.

The FUN Winter Concert, featuring a mix of music performed by talented young musicians, is also cosponsored by Newtown Congregational Church, Suzuki Music School, Connecticut Music Therapy, and supports Newtown Parent Connection (NPC).

A number of the young adult and collegiate performers are former students of the Suzuki School, which is also located within Sandy Hook.

“The theme of this year’s concert is ‘moving through open doors’ — and we will be celebrating those who are coping with, as well as those lost to, substance abuse,” Ms Jones said. “A brief talk on the theme will be held with Jay Thomas and will celebrate those lost. Candles will be lit to commemorate those lost.”

Proceeds will be shared between FUN and NPC.

All attendees are invited to a post concert reception, which will include light refreshments.
