The Newtown Fund is making one final appeal for support ahead of December 15, when the annual Adopt-A-Family event will culminate in Depot Day.

On that Saturday, volunteers from throughout town will converge on Fraser Woods Montessori School, where they will drop off the hundreds of gifts they have purchased for any of the 65 families that have requested holiday assistance this season. Additional donations of items and finances are still sought. The latter will be used by the Fund to buy all-important items such as supplemental food, fuel, clothing, gift cards, and additional clothing on the wish lists of recipients.

Linda Bates, president of The Newtown Fund, is asking all residents to make a special effort this year to help, since monetary donations are down.

“Any extra financial donations will be greatly appreciated and help make this time even brighter for these friends,” Ms Bates said this week.

Many of the items listed by the families being supported this year are greatly needed, including winter coats, boots, blankets, and warm clothing for the cold months ahead. Families reach out through Newtown Social Services or are suggested by local clergy, but their names are kept anonymous to those who help with Adopt-A-Family.

Since 1959, The Newtown Fund has supported residents in need by paying for food, utility bills, rent, and medical expenses during the year, in addition to the December Holiday Basket/Adopt-A-Family program.

“We are so proud of Newtown’s residents because they always chip in to help others in need,” added Ms Bates.

In addition to general donations, residents can offer a tax-deductible contribution to the fund as an expression of sympathy in memory of a loved one, a unique gift for a special occasion, or as a donation through an estate.
