Among the samplers and silhouettes that crossed the block, an English map example, back row, for $300 and the smaller English sampler, front, made by Ann Bond, sold for $450.

 

Included in the 345 lots was a salt glazed stoneware jug with cobalt bird, attributed to Fulper, for $230.

A fox hunting print, that showed some foxing, was titled “The Meet” and brought $120.

GUTHMAN SALE

 

Lot 12, a toleware tombstone hat plate, Westbrook Artillery, Maine, circa 1820, 71/8 inches high, is estimated at $5/7,000.

 

Lot 29, a rare painted cardboard pattern for a hat plate, circa 1815, measures 101/4 inches high, red background with blue band and gold lettering and eagle.

 

Lot 100, a painted militia dragoon helmet, New Milford, Conn., 1820-30, 11 inches high, with an estimate of $20/25,000. It has a black leather body and pierced metal crest.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lot 233, an iron cannon with raised American eagle motif, War of 1812, 431/2 inches long, and the only iron cannon known to have the eagle motif. The provenance lists Marvin Hatch, Hartland, Vt., and Harold Cole, Woodbury, Conn. The estimate is $18/20,000.

 

Lot 277, one of the many wood canteens in the sale, Liberty or Death, possibly Revolutionary War era, more probably War of 1812, measures 71/4 inches in diameter and has an estimate of $20/30,000. The provenance lists Rockwell Gardiner, Stamford, Conn., and this piece has been exhibited at the American Folk Art Museum.

 

Lot 301, a militia knapsack, Massachusetts, 1815-1825, red painted canvas with black border and the word Liberty under 13 stars, is estimated at $8/10,000. It measures 131/4 inches high, 133/8 inches wide.

 

Lot 351, the last object in the sale, a very large painted bass drum, circa 1799, with eagle, flags, arrows, shield, muskets and cannonballs. It is 27 inches high, 28 inches in diameter, and carries an estimate of $25/35,000. The provenance lists John Bihler and Henry Coger, Ashley Falls, Mass.
