Drug Bust

Police charged Carl J. Zozzaro, 53, of 9 Edgewood Drive on December 11 on a warrant with possession of narcotics and with possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell.

Police said Zozzaro's arrest is based on an investigation conducted by Newtown police and by members of the state police's Statewide Narcotics Task Force. Police said Zozzaro allegedly sold cocaine and the prescription drug Oxycontin from his residence during last May and June. Edgewood Drive is a side street off Schoolhouse Hill Road, near Interstate 84.

Police said they processed Zozzaro's arrest at the state police's Troop A barracks in Southbury. Zozzaro was released from custody on a $10,000 nonsurety bond for a December 22 arraignment on the charges before a judge in Danbury Superior Court.

Nissan Crash

Motorist Robert Mongillo, 28, of Stratford was driving a 2001 Nissan Altima southward on Taunton Hill Road about 4 pm December 9, when he rounded a curve and lost control of the auto on the wet road, police report. The Nissan went into a spin and slid in a tree, police said.

Mongillo was not injured in the mishap. Police verbally warned him for failure to drive to the right.

Honda Into Mailbox

Motorist Stacy Shpunt, 16, of 12 Partridge Lane was driving a 2003 Honda Civic eastward on Scudder Road about 4:24 pm December 8, when the vehicle slid on the snowy road and struck a mailbox at 27 Scudder Road, according to police.

Shpunt was not injured. Police verbally warned Shpunt for traveling too fast for conditions.

Veterinarian Check

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Nathaniel Hopkins, 27, of New Fairfield turned himself in on December 11 and was charged with issuing a bad check.

Police said the charge stems from a May 31 incident at Mt Pleasant Hospital for Animals on Mt Pleasant Road in Hawleyville. Police held Hopkins on a $1,000 bond for a December 11 court appearance.

Honda Hits Rock

Motorist Jeffrey Watson, 39, of 11 Pond Brook Road was driving a 1996 Honda Civic eastward on that road about 9:43 am December 9, as an unidentified noncontact vehicle was driving westward there, police said.

Police said the noncontact vehicle was traveling out of its lane, so the Honda swerved to the right to avoid it, but in doing so the Honda drove into a rock.

Watson was not injured in the mishap. Police verbally warned him for making a restricted turn.

CD Player

Newtown High School security personnel spotted Justin Gaynor, 16, of 12 Alberts Hill Road removing a compact disc player from another person's locker at the school at about 8:30 pm December 10, police report.

Police charged Gaynor with sixth degree larceny. Gaynor was scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charge, police said.

South Main DUI

Police said they received a report of a motorist driving erratically northward on South Main Street at about 12:27 am December 11.

Police said they went to the area and found motorist John M. Costello, 67, of Easton was parked on South Main Street. Police said they gave Costello field sobriety test, after which they charged him with driving under the influence.

After processing his arrest, police released Costello on a $50 bond for a December 23 court appearance.

Hattertown DUI

Motorist James C. Eckler, 23, of Bethel was driving a 1999 Honda Civic on Hattertown Road, near its intersection with Wiley Road, about 1 am December 11, when the vehicle collided with guard cabling and a guard post, police said.

Police went to the scene to investigate the accident, in which there were no injuries. Police said they gave Eckler field sobriety tests, after which they charged him with driving under the influence and failure to drive to the right.

After processing his arrest, police released Eckler on a $50 bond for a December 26 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Minivan Vs Pickup

Motorist Rosario Castillo, 57, of Bridgeport was driving a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup truck northward on South Main Street and then turned right to enter Prospect Drive at about 7:20 pm December 11, when motorist Joseph Gianfortune, 42, of Danbury, who was driving a 1990 Plymouth Voyager minivan, pulled out from a stop sign at the northerly end of Pecks Lane and collided with the Ford, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Gianfortune a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

Key Rock Puddle

Motorist Scott Newberry, 16, of 3 Antler Pine Road was driving a 1992 Buick Century southward on Key Rock Road about 10 pm December 11, when the vehicle traveled through water that was standing on the roadway, police said. The Buick went off the road and became stuck alongside it, police said.

Neither Newberry nor two passengers were injured. Police issued Newberry a written warning for making a restricted turn.

DUI Arrest

Police report they were called to a residence in connection with a domestic dispute at about 6 pm December 14. While enroute to the address, police learned that the person involved in the incident was intoxicated and had left the residence driving a Subaru.

Police said they stopped the Subaru on Paugussett Road and investigated. The Subaru's driver Thomas J. Schick, 42, of 55 Osborne Hill Road, failed field sobriety tests and was charged with driving under the influence and with failure to carry a driver's license, police said.

In connection with the preceding domestic dispute, police charged Schick with disorderly conduct and with risk of injury to a minor.

Schick was scheduled to appear in court December 15 to answer the charges stemming from the domestic dispute. He was slated to appear in court January 6 to answer the motor vehicle charges.

Mailbox Problems

Police said they are investigating incidents in which some residential mailboxes were damaged and some were stolen from their locations along Hundred Acres Road. The vandalism and thefts occurred between 6 pm December 8 and 7 am December 9. Police are seeking information on the matter through their anonymous tip line at 270-8888.

Moving Violations

Police said they stopped motorist Jennifer Kinsella, 20, of Trumbull who was driving a 1996 Hyundai Accent at 44 miles per hour in a 30-mph zone southward on South Main Street about 10:47 pm on December 9.

Police charged Kinsella with traveling too fast and with driving under suspension. After processing the case, police released Kinsella on a promise to appear December 23 in Danbury Superior Court.

Alberts Hill Road

Motorist Ernest DeBorja, 43, of Wilton was driving a 1990 Ford Aerostar eastward on Alberts Hill Road, west of Walnut Tree Hill Road, about 12:11 pm December 14, when the minivan went out of control on the snowy road and went into a spin. The vehicle came to rest in some brush and a snow bank.

DeBorja was not injured. Police took no enforcement action.

School Bus Accident

School bus driver Sally Repasi, 42, of 25 Chestnut Hill Road was driving School Bus #21, which was carrying approximately 30 students, at about 9 am December 11 on the narrow Aunt Park Lane, police said.

As the bus was making a right turn from Aunt Park Lane onto Hattertown Road, it collided with a town highway department truck, which was parked on the opposite road shoulder of Aunt Park Lane, police said.

The rear end of the bus collided with the rear end of the truck, police said. The truck was driven by William Moseley, 55, of 191 Hanover Road, police said. There were no injuries, police said.

Students from Bus #21 were transferred onto Bus #24 to continue their ride to school, police said. Police took no enforcement action.

Toddy Hill Slide

Motorist Ira Reines, 45, of Ridgefield, who was driving a full-sized 1990 Mercury Marquis sedan on Toddy Hill Road at about 10:27 am December 28, began to brake for a school bus, but began to slide on the wet road, veered off the road, and struck a stone wall and snow bank, police said.

Reines was not injured. Police issued him an infraction ticket for failure to renew a driver’s license and verbally warned him for traveling too fast for conditions.

Red Vehicle Vs House

Police report that sometime between 11 am and 2:30 pm on December 8, someone who was driving a "red vehicle" drove through the front door of a residence at 4 Underhill Road in the Riverside section. The offending motorist then fled the scene. The impact damaged the house. The accident is under investigation. Police ask anyone with information on the identity of the red vehicle's driver to contact them at 426-5841.

Church Hill Collision

At about 11:20 am December 9, motorist Gerald Valenti, 33, of Redding, who was driving a 2000 Audi A-8 sedan westward on Church Hill Road, near Edmond Road, collided with a turning westbound tractor-trailer truck driven by Iuxel Mehmed, 34, of Garfield, N.J., police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Valenti a written warning for passing on the right.

Dodge Vs Ford

Motorist Alexander Rotas, 18, of 1 Pine Tree Hill Road, who was driving a 1999 Ford van southward on South Main Street, stopped to make a right turn onto Blue Spruce Drive about 12:39 pm December 11, police said.

The Ford was struck from behind by southbound motorist Angela Marie Guidi, 19, of Ansonia, who was driving a 2002 Dodge Neon, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Guidi a written warning for following too closely and failure to carry current automotive insurance.

Mile Hill Mishap

Motorist David Andreotta, 43, of 42 Charter Ridge Road, who was driving a 2002 Audi A-8 sedan, was stopped in traffic on westbound Mile Hill Road, near its intersection with South Main Street, about 3:22 pm December 8, when the Audi was struck from behind by motorist Carlos Rivera, 36 of Bridgeport, who was driving a 1994 Nissan Sentra, police said. There were no injuries.

Police issued Rivera an infraction ticket for traveling too fast for conditions and for failure to carry an automotive insurance identification card.

Railroad Bridge

Eastbound motorist Barbara Williams, 49, of Southbury, who was driving a 1996 Saturn SL-1, slowed for traffic on Church Hill Road beneath the Housatonic Railroad overpass at about noon December 12, and was struck from behind by motorist Robert Nute, 24, of Easton, who was driving a 2000 Dodge Dakota pickup truck, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Nute a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart and for failure to carry an automotive insurance identification card.

DUI Arrest

Police said they stopped motorist Richard Gibbs, 54, of Burlington on Mile Hill Road at about 3:43 pm December 12, after receiving a report that he was driving erratically. Gibbs was unable to complete sobriety testing, police said.

Police charged Gibbs with driving under the influence, failure to drive in the proper lane, failure to keep to the right on a curve, and failure to carry a driver’s license.

After processing his arrest, police released Gibbs on a $100 bond for a January 6 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Drug Charges

Following a domestic dispute on December 14, police charged Peter MacKay, 18, of 12 Walker Hill Road with disorderly conduct, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

Police released MacKay for an appearance the following day in Danbury Superior Court.

Four-Vehicle Crash

Police report that motorist Theresa Hennesey, 43, of 37 Eden Hill Road was driving a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer sport-utility vehicle northward on South Main Street, near its intersection with Glover Avenue, about 6 pm December 15, when the Mercury failed to stop in time and collided with the rear end of a stopped 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Muta Fernanda, 26, of Miramar, Fla.

The impact of that crash pushed the Jeep forward into the rear end of a stopped 1998 Dodge Avenger driven by Vincent Graziano, 53, of Brookfield, police said.

That impact pushed the Dodge forward into the rear end of a stopped 2001 Honda driven by Cheryl Nethercott, 24, of Danbury, police said.

There were no injuries in the multivehicle crash, police said. Police issued Hennessey an infraction ticket for driving an unreasonable distance apart.

Mile Hill Collision

Motorist Berea Bruccoleri, 16, of 11 Palestine Road, who was driving a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup truck, was stopped at a traffic signal on westbound Mile Hill Road, near South Main Street, about 10:24 pm December 12, police said.

Motorist Michael Keen, 42, of New Fairfield, who was driving a 1997 Toyota Corolla, then drove into the rear end of the Ford, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Keen an infraction ticket for following too closely.

Olds Vs Deer

Motorist Christopher Sterk, 39, of New Milford, who was driving a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero westbound on Currituck Road about 7 pm December 11, collided with a deer near 172 Currituck Road, police said. Sterk was not injured in the mishap, police said.

Ford Rollover

Motorist James Kast, Jr, 35, of Bridgewater, who was driving a 1980 Ford Bronco southward on Hanover Road near Silver City Road at about 6:14 pm December 9, lost control of the Ford as a large truck passed by, police said.

The Ford rolled onto its side, but Kast was not injured, police said. Newtown Hook and Ladder firefighters went to the accident to cleanup a minor fuel spill, police said.

Police issued Kast an infraction ticket for driving without a driver’s license. Police also verbally warned Kast for a traffic violation.

Jeep Vs Dodge

Motorist Robert Kopchik, 55, of 14 Mt Pleasant Road, who was driving a 1991 Dodge Caravan northward on South Main Street about 1:40 pm December 15, slowed for traffic conditions and was struck from behind by northbound motorist Marjorie Bliss, 23, of 42 Bears Hill Road, who was driving a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Bliss a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart. Police issued Kopchik a written warning for failure to carry an automotive insurance card.

Snowplow Crash

Police report a three-vehicle accident at the hazardous intersection of South Main Street and Swamp Road about 7:30 am December 10.

Motorist Stanley Kokoszka, 38, of 12 Bayberry Drive, who was driving a 2003 Ford F-250 pickup truck with a snowplow attached, was pulling out a driveway on the west side of South Main Street in order to cross South Main Street and enter Swamp Road, when the snowplow struck the left rear side of a northbound 2000 Dodge Caravan minivan driven by Javier Izaquirro, 59, of East Haven, police said.

That impact pushed the Dodge into a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Paul Hufziger of 20 Marlin Road. The Chevrolet had been stopped at a stop sign at the end of Swamp Road, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Kokoszka an infraction ticket for failure to grant the right of way. Police verbally warned Izaquirro for failure to renew a vehicle registration.

Harassment Charges

In two separate arrest warrants served on December 14 and 17, police charged Gail Rothe, 48, of Southbury with a total of three counts of harassment in connection with incidents earlier this year, police said. Rothe was scheduled to appear in court to answer the charges.

Wage Charge

After learning that police held a warrant for her arrest, Eileen Fish, 42, of 4 Fawnwood Road, Sandy Hook, turned herself over to police about 9:35 am December 16 and was charged with failure to pay wages.

Police said they released Fish after she posted a court-set $2,500 bond. Fish is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on January 7 to answer the charge.

Police said the state Labor Department obtained the warrant for Fish's arrest following its investigation into the case. Police then served the warrant against Fish.

Chevrolet Into Fence

While driving a 1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo southward on West Street on the afternoon of December 17, motorist Kathryn Daugherty, 17, of 145 Head of Meadow Road was traveling through heavy rain and fog, police said. Daugherty did not realize that the road has a sharp curve to the right and struck a line of fencing at 47 West Street, police said.

Daugherty was not injured in the mishap. Police took no enforcement action.
