“Bagel Delight Quietly Passes Silver Anniversary,” by Shannon Hicks, published December 14. The bagel shop and deli at 34 Church Hill Road quietly celebrated its 25th anniversary last month. It was quietly observed in the heart of proprietor Eunice Laverty, however, who has been the face, voice, heart and soul of the bagel shop and deli since the business opened in November 1995. “Flags Being Lowered To Remember Victims Of 12/14,” by Shannon Hicks, published December 14. At the direction of Governor Ned Lamont, flags were lowered to remember the 26 children and women killed at Sandy Hook School eight years ago, on December 14, 2012. Newtown’s Dorrie Carolan is well aware that families across the region are experiencing the same challenges coping with, and sometimes losing loved ones to, substance abuse, as are her many local contacts. “‘Significant Winter Storm’ Blankets Newtown; No Outages Reported By Daybreak,” by Shannon Hicks, published December 17. Newtown was blanketed with nearly a foot of snow after a winter storm moved through town Wednesday evening into Thursday morning last week. “Health Director: Newtown Front Liners, Care Facilities ‘Can’t Get COVID Vaccine Fast Enough,’” by John Voket, published December 17. As in-town coronavirus positivity accelerated past 30 percent (30.1 per 100k), and several new fatalities were reported since this time recently, Newtown Health District Director Donna Culbert said she was relieved to see Connecticut begin administering its first minute fraction of COVID-19 vaccines.
