Families United in Newtown (FUN) is sponsoring their Annual Autism Awareness Benefit Concert and Dinner at Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street, on Saturday, December 30, at 4 pm.

The concert theme “We Have a Voice” will demonstrate the power of music as a form of communication featuring special guest and Connecticut’s own Amanda Mammana.

At the age of 10, Mammana developed a stutter. Once an outgoing and social kid, she became quiet and reserved, always hesitant to speak for fear of rejection, misunderstanding or mockery.

During that time, she found music, and it became her solace, a place of escape where notes and a melody could do the talking. While music eased the challenge of speaking, it did not erase it and Mammana continued to battle with feelings of doubt and insecurity as she grew up.

After a particularly difficult summer, she turned to songwriting and there found the freedom to share her heart and her story, with the hopes of encouraging others in their own journey.

In 2022, Mammana appeared on season 17 of America’s Got Talent, making it all the way to the semifinals. She touched the hearts of millions with her powerful original, “Back to Life,” a song of gratitude for the challenges that have made her who she is today.

As her stutter remains, Mammana finds her voice in music. She hopes everyone who listens to her songs feels seen, heard, and known. Her main goal is to inspire and bring hope to the world and empower every person to not let challenges keep them from chasing their dreams.

In addition to Mammana, several local performers will be featured, sharing their musical talents during the December 30 performance.

A reception will follow the concert featuring dinner from local restaurants, delicious desserts, and more music. Gluten-free items will also be available.

Families United in Newtown was established in 2008 by residents Linda and Duane Jones with a dream of providing recreational programs and respite for families with special needs children. Following the tragic death of their son Tyler, the program blossomed with the support of Newtown High School National Honor Society students.

FUN held its first meeting in October 2010 in memory of Tyler, and since then has hosted regular meetings. FUN provides an outlet for families with special needs children and also promotes autism awareness.
