Local children’s author Dori Marx spoke with students at Head O’ Meadow Elementary School on December 5.

Students heard about where she gets her story ideas and more.

“My books follow the adventures of the Cook family,” Ms Marx told one class in the school’s library.

Using a slideshow of illustrations, Ms Marx introduced the students to her characters.

“When I was a little girl, I always loved to read and write,” she shared.

Ms Marx said she grew up in Austria, and she has always loved mysteries. Her books follow mysteries, and her characters discover clues in the environment that help them figure out what is happening, she explained.

“My books take you to different countries,” Ms Marx said about her Wonder World Kids book series.

Ms Marx discussed what it has been like to work with different illustrators, all from the countries her books are based in. She then had the students sit for one minute while holding a pencil over a sheet of blank paper. She told them to think of boring thoughts, then she asked them to write down three to four boring thoughts they had during the minute. The writing exercise was followed by discussion of where she comes up with ideas for her books.
