Workshops & Programs In Jan. At WCAC

DANBURY — Imagination and technique are the focus of three distinctive painting intensives featured at Wooster Community Art Center during the month of January. Also to be offered during the month will be four workshops for children, parents, and children and parents together.

“Figure in the Interior”  (January 10-13, 10 am to 3 pm each day) will offer students an opportunity to do an in-depth study of a clothed model in an interior setting addressing issues of mood, context, narrative and technique. “Painting: Symbolism & Surrealism” (January 17-20, 10 am to 3 pm) will help students develop personal, symbolic visual languages using the figure, landscape, and still life.

“The Power of Subjective Abstraction” (January 24-28, 10 am to 3 pm) will explore issues of composition, concept and personal vision in non-objective abstraction.

WCAC is also offering two one-night workshops in drawing and printmaking: “Drawing At Large” (January 20, 7 to 10 pm) will give students an opportunity to create a life-size representational or abstract self-portrait using their whole bodies; while “Printmaking For Painters” (January 27, 6 to 10 pm) will teach students how to make a monoprint from an original oil painting. Both workshops meet on a Thursday night.

In addition, WCAC is offering workshops in “Black and White Photography” (January 29, 10 am to 4 pm), “Throwing Pottery” (January 22-23, 10 am to 4 pm), and “Sensational Art” (January 24, 7 to 9 pm), an art history workshop which will consider scandalous art from ancient to contemporary times.

For children, “Live Music and Making Art For Kids Ages 7-13” (January 22, 10 am to 1 pm) will bring a professional ensemble of musicians into the art studio to explore with kids the parallels between making music and creating art.

“Soft Sculpture/Self-Portrait For Kids ages 8-16” (January 18 and 25, 4 to 6 pm) gives kids a chance to express themselves as they create a piece of “soft” sculpture drawing on experiences and images from their lives.

For parents and children together, “Parent and Child Workshop In Art with 4-6 Year Olds” (January 15, 10 am to noon) will offer an opportunity for time together in the studio with guided creative activities.

For parents, “A Parent Workshop” (January 13, 10 am to noon) will show parents how to create an art journal using the paintings, photos and memorabilia from their children’s lives.

The parent and child workshops will be taught by professional artists Elizabeth Hill, Carey McDougall, William Giese and Pam Smilow. All are experienced teachers who work with children regularly.

All workshops at WCAC are limited in size to insure individualized attention. Pre-registration is required. For further information or to request a brochure, call the Wooster Community Art Center office at 744-4825. WCAC is at 73 Miry Brook Road in Danbury.
